Cobra MkIII, Asp Scout or Asp Explorer? (SOLVED) (No, it's really solved, please stop!)
Well, i have 8 mil total assets (incl. a Cobra), so should I go and get an Asp?
Is an Asp multipurpose like a Cobra, or not?
Any thoughts?

The short version, it's internals make it an excellent mid-sized all-rounder w/space for rovers, shields, scoop, cargo all at once.
It can also be fitted for dedicated exploration at around $25Mil
Its size means you can land in outposts and not just large stations.
Runs quite cool for smuggling if thats your bag.

EDIT: I used an AspX from 20Mil to 200Mil credits

Cobra III is not multipurpose, it is at best a rare trader, and run around.
The Small multipurpose is the Viper mk. IV. as it can actually DO everything, and do it suprisingly well, and or WAY better than the Cobra mk. III can.

Asp X, is at best a Run around and light tier smuggler. Multiroll it is not. It can be fitted for combat, but if you want an Asp variant for combat, go Asp Scout.

total assets doesnt tell us much, its the credits on hand, and your cobra mk IIIs ships value that let us know the ammount you can spend, but with with 8 mil in assets, you cant afford a decent Asp X fit, AND still have money for rebuys.

ATM, you should stay where you are at. And earn till you have at least made it (in on hand cash) to 18 - 20 million. That will allow you to safely tier up to a low class medium ship.

Well, I'll make another mil or 2 (or maybe 10) and buy an Explorer then.
Offtopic: What is "Diamondback Explorer"?

Small-class, highest engineered jump range of all ships
Makes a great budget explorer, albeit with limited internals. You're probably gunna sacrifice shields if you want rover and repair capabilities.
surprisingly able to hold its own in combat with the right modules.

Asp explorer is good but i think theres some under-estimating on cost.

The diaguandri system is your best bet - they sell the asp 15% off at 5.6 mill and 15% off the mods,,, But i think your going to be at least in the 15-25 mill cost range to fit it.

Yup, I've had a diamondback explorer for a while and it's much better than the cobra I once had.

For a decent fit, that'll be the pricetag.

Quite a flexible ship though, if you want to do a little bit of everything, that's your best bet at that price range.

Nah, it's beaten by the Diamondback Explorer and Anaconda. The Asp Explorer is alot more flexible though and is capable of landing on small landing pads.

The CObra 3 is indeed a multipurpose ship, despite what others may be saying here. It can do a bit of everything reasonably well. The Asp E is like the Cobra's bigger, more successful brother. The Viper 4 is a good ship, with arguably better hardpoint placement than the Cobra 3, but otherwise is very similar in terms of fit and function.

The Cobra 4 was a missed opportunity, they could have made it a ship to compete in the Asp E range, but instead it's just gimped.

The DBE did recently get upgraded and I haven't tried it yet. Used to be that it was a gimped big brother of the DBS, in the same way that the Cobra 4 is to the Cobra 3, but apparently they have made a major increase on its jump range making it an effective explorer. So that ship is probably worth a look. Don't know how it fares in combat however.

I know it's probably too late, but I recommend the Lakon Keelback. It's fundamentally inferior to the Asp Explorer, but unlike the Asp you can actually afford & equip it with your current budget.

Keelbacks are a strange ship, they're a Type 6 hull fitted with armour plate and bigger internal bays. They have a strong Jump Range, a better cargo capacity than a Cobra and their Fighter Hangar and Class 5 shield generator makes them surprisingly fearsome in combat.

A fully A-Rated Keelback comes in within your budget, wheras you could barely afford an Asp Explorer chassis. I would suggest buying it for now, making some money with it, and then trading up to an Asp Explorer once you can afford it.
