Icy/Metal Rich Rings?
Hallo folks - given that my combat experiences to this point have been...er...rather amusing to outside viewers, I've turned my attention to mining for a while.

It's tremendously relaxing fun; emphasis on the 'relaxing'. I have a planet 2 minutes away with both an icy and a metal-rich ring; to this date I've focused on the metal-rich. Osmium pays well, as does gold and that very long P-something or other.

My question is, in terms of value vs. availablility, which resources do you find to pay the best? I have returned with a bellyful (90t) of gold which was VERY lucrative but took forever; I'm looking to find a good median between profit and time spent in the field. Any opinions you might have will be very welcome. :)

Cheers!

pristine metallic rings (look for them in 0 population systems), and within those, go for palladium, platinum and painite. Those are the ones that sell the best in bulk, and then you also have Osmium and Samarium which can be placed in missions.
Prestine system with Metallic Rings is what your looking for.
Excellent thank you - I'm still fairly central in the galaxy; I haven't found a pristine ring system yet - everybody else have been here first. I think it's safe to assume I should select a random direction discward and boost away for a couple of hours?

No, not really. There's a truckload of pristine rings inside the bubble. The 0 pop thing is a way to find them, but you can use this[edtools.ddns.net] instead.

Thank you so much!
I'm only just learning some of the off-site tools to help me get around; this is a new one for me, I'll put it to good use immediately. :)
Cheers!
Here's another site that might come in handy: http://www.hozbase.co.uk/elitedangerous
You can make the biggest payout by doing mining missions. Find a station with multiple factions giving such missions, ideally very close to the pristine metallic/ice rings, and build up your reputation with these factions. You will ultimately get osmium/brommelite/mmc missions yielding 120-150k per ton of material. Stack them up and go mining, then hold on to any excess materials for the next time you log in and missions are re-spawned ;)

Thanks for the advice - using the tool I've found a VERY lucrative ringed planet. It took some flying to get to, and since I swapped my Advanced Discovery Scanner out for a Refinery I had to go back, transfer my ADS up to the new station, install it, go back, scan about a dozen bodies, go back, re-install my refinery and return to the system.
Ooo-yeah; this game is fun. (sigh.)
LOL
In the rings now and happily prospecting - just 20t of palladium and I've already surpassed my max profit to this point and I have 82 probes left...this is nice!
In ice asteroids you probably can pick up quite some low-temperature diamonds - they are very expensive. I remember looking for something in an ice ring, and the very first asteroid dropped me diamonds. I dumped them, cause was busy with something else. But I always wanted to repeat this finding, it's just mining is not my cup of a hot beverage.
Hey folks; just wanted to say thanks again - your advice has increased my mining profits by a factor of 10.

I do have another question: I have a rather frustrating problem with my collector limpets not performing up to spec.
I have 3A collector/prospector controllers and a 2A refinery with 104 cargo space in my Asp-Ex. I go out stuffed to the gills with limpets since I tend to shoot off 6 or so before I find a good asteroid.

I watch the refinery carefully; use the laser just enough to keep about 10 fragments floating at any one time. I discard any mineral in the refinery I'm not currently grabbing, keeping only the minerals the prospector tells me is in the rock. I insure there is cargo space as well.

In other words there is space in the hold, there is space in the refinery, the hatch is open and there are fresh limpets outside. For some reason, either one or both will frequently stop dead under my ship; refusing to unload or drop its fragment. I'll drain the refinery, no effect. I'll back off slightly, no effect. In short, nothing I do will make the limpets start moving again until the fragments they are holding evaporate.

Does anyone know the reason for this? Is it a bug or just a frustrating reality of dealing with these quirky little robots? I'd dearly love to find out an answer; I'm starting to throw (soft) things at my monitor. :)

Cheers!
Could be that the limpets are trying to bring in materials and your materials inventory is full.

Regarding refineries, a 4A has just enough that you won't have to worry about flushing hoppers in a given ring.
Ohhhh materials? I totally forgot them! OK; I'll start deleting them - I don't bother with engineers yet so it should be safe.
Thanks!
