Elite Dangerous

T.Flight HOTAS 4
Hi all!
Just bought the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 and it seems to be working fine. Tested it in the control panel and all - buttons and joystick responds. BUT I can't use it in Elite: Dangerous. Anyone know why that is? Certain settings I've missed?

Try selecting a Generic joystick or Thrustmaster preset under controls

Didn't find Thrustmaster preset. Did find Generic joystick, however, but I couldn't use my left hand throttle with it. Or, at least it didn't seem like it.

It should be listed under there, my brother has 1 and it works fine. In fact, I think it's the most commonly used joystick used in the game.

Go here and download and install this http://www.xedocproject.com/joystickcurves.html

Now go here and follow this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqzoJPCZM0w

I have one too, it works straight out of the box but I prefer my ps4 controller instead.

@Judz: Thanks! I'll look into that.

@Pesty: What preset did you use? I tried Generic Joystick. Was it something I missed? How do I use my throttle?
I had the same issue with my T.flight Hotas X. The game used to work with it and then a week ago it stopped working.

I just had Elite: Dangerous support get back to me about it. The problem lies in Steam and how it expanded the Steam Controller backend to include non Steam controllers. That is: you now have the option of reconfiguring Xbox360/One or PS4 controllers as though they are Steam controllers. This extends to the T.Flight series too.

So, to fix the issue enter Steam Big Picture mode and go to the settings screen. In there go to the controller setup. Now uncheck "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support". This should enable Elite to detect the joystick properly and use it. It worked for me :steamhappy:

When you plug the joystick in there should be a T flight Hotas Context that shows up in the menu. If it's not popping up for you then I don't know what to tell you.

It's the Steam controller settings. Steam Controller support was recently updated to allow other controllers to be customized. You have to switch off support for generic controllers in the Steam Controller settings. See my previous posting for instructions :)

Try just using the game launcher without going into/launching steam.

For e.g, mine is at

C:\Users\(your user acount)\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\elite-dangerous-64

Yours will be at

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64

Did you load the drivers?

Really?! He said "Tested it in the control panel and all - buttons and joystick responds." This would have failed if the drivers were not installed :P

Nope, it would still be there even if he didnt install the drivers

Time to be schooled :steammocking: ...

As an ex PC technician and software developer who had access to information on how Windows works at the core I can tell you without uncertainty that without any drivers Windows does not know what to do with any hardware presented to it. It would not provide the test dialog the OP used to test the joystick because it would not know it was a joystick without the drivers!

That said, Windows comes with default HID (Human Interface Devices) drivers built in that almost all generic USB joysticks and controllers use. There are no drivers to install for the Hotas 4 as it's an HID device. I own a Hotas X (the previous model) but my understanding of the Hotas 4 is that it's identical to the Hotas X except that it supports PS4 instead of PS3 (A mode switch is used to tell the joystick when it's connected to a PC or PS3/4). The Hotas 4 also has the added ability for firmware updates, something the Hotas X does not. For this it would need specialised drivers to allow communication to the joystick for firmware updates, but for generic use of the joystick the built in HID drivers of Windows are all that's needed.

Thanks for your answers! I entered big screen and found T.Flight Hotas 4 in the menu of recognised controllers. The "Generic"-option was unchecked as default it seems so that can't be my problem. So in every way it seems my problem lies in the following two statements:

1. I can't find a controller preset that enables every aspect of my HOTAS (I did try "Generic Joystick" but it only seem to enable a few buttons on it so I can't fully use it to cruise around. For example: it does not enable me to use my throttle). I tried to download other presets but they're not working at all. I can find them in the list and enable them, but in game my controller does not react to it at all.

2. I'm too inexperienced in the game so I don't really know what to look for or how to manually setup my buttons and sticks. In the list I dunno what half of it is so to manually adjust my controller hardly looks like an option for me. I'm too dumb for this. Can you recommend a preset that I can use? Should there be an option for "HOTAS" in the preset menu, because I can't seem to find it?

Ok, it seems that it's just a case of learning how to customise the controls in Elite. Not much we can do to help you there. It would have been helpfull if the game allowed us to save the custom controls. Maybe then we could share them with you. But alas it does not :steamsad:

Just work at it, keep the defaults for now and as you come across something you don't like, go in and change it :)
