Steam Link Android Troubleshooting
The official Steam Link Android support page is here:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4415-USKX-8715

Here is some additional troubleshooting information that may help:

Mouse cursor offset when touching the screen
* The game probably renders it's own cursor and Steam is sending relative motion for touch input. Please post here with the game that has the problem and we'll look into it.

Stuttery mess often followed by a stream shutdown
* Your device is very likely on 2.4 GHz WiFi. If it doesn't support 802.11ac, it's not supported.

Back button acting like Steam Controller guide button
* That's correct, the power or guide button on Android controllers often is intercepted by Android as the home button and isn't available to applications. If you can map it using the app controller settings, please post here and we'll add it to the list of controllers that have working guide buttons.

Black screen at stream start often followed by a stream shutdown
* Please post a link to the file Steam\logs\streaming_log.txt, from your computer, in this thread so we can see what's happening.

To fix that would it be a setting / feature of the controller itself (I'm using an Xbox One S controller) or a setting in the Android OS itself?

Think of the controller like a keyboard; just like the Android OS would grab the volume keys on a media keyboard and use those to adjust the system volume (thus preventing you from using them in an application), it grabs the standard gamepad 'guide' button and uses it like Home to make navigation easier.

Which does indeed make navigation easier when using the controller to navigate apps normally, but prevents Steam Link from grabbing that button to use for its own purposes.

So yeah, to change that behavior would require changes to Android.

Do you mean the Steam Link (beta) should generate that log on the android device if it just closes immediately after start attempt? I couldn't find it (not even the Steam folder) with ES File Explorer

No, this file is in the Steam folder on your computer.

Is there a settings option on the phone to start the games without the black bars coming up on the left and right side of the screen? :) On my laptop the game runs in full screen mode but it would be great to have a better beauty experience if the black bars were not there on the phone :)

Actually there must be a way, I also use regularily VirtualHere and once the controller is registered in virtualhere, it basically is deregistered for the AndroidOS, and I can basically push all inputs to virtualhere without any problems coming from Android. Not sure what those guys did to basically achieve this, but it is possible as it seems. I will try it again (it has been a while, tomorrow, to see if I am right with what I vaguely remember)

In addition to what werner said (intercepting the Xbox and guide buttons), I think another potential workaround (if steam implemented) would be to give us control of the buttons if we disable steam overlay. Currently, even if I disabled the steam overlay, the menu/guide buttons still don't work in game. I personally would be fine sacrificing steam overlay to get proper control functionality, but the appropriate fix would be to get the steam link app to completely take over the controller input (as previously mentioned).

Network's a bit slow, the computer starts big picture but the steam link app seems to reset.

My problem: Black screen at stream start often followed by a stream shutdown
Here's my log file: https://pastebin.com/wMAET5qQ

I'm using WiFi on both devices and I'm unable to use wired network just yet. Haven't tried any other solution except messing around with the In-Home Streaming options and still having the same issue.

@Slouken looking at these logs it really seems like chromebook should work, it's running android 7.1.1, I even got the app off of the play store. What is it that would be different about it than a phone? It's *so close* to working.
