Well, I was thinking more mouse-like, but now I'm kinda wondering if it parallels the D-Pad., excluding touch-sensitivity.
But it doesn't stop at ten, because in a lot of games the control pad isn't really used for movement and can be assigned to things, so that's 14 buttons.
If you count Start and Select, an Xbox 360 controller has 16 buttons, but Start and Select are typically used for menu stuff and pausing the game. For simplicities sake, I'll count Start and Select.
That gives Xbox 360 Controller 16 buttons, whereas this controller only appears to have 12. Not good IMO if that's the case. I tried finding how many buttons on the product page but it doesn't seem to say.
Replacing the D-Pad with a touchpad means one more button (plus the input range of a touchpad) and there are two extra buttons on the underside of the controller
Replacing the right analog stick with a touchpad doesn't change the number of buttons, either, though it does at more potential input range.
That makes a total of 16 buttons that Xbox 360 controller can use.
So what buttons does the Steam Controller have and where are they located?
If we want to be accurate, the 360 controller has only 10 buttons, including Start and Back. The Dpad is not 4 buttons, but a single device with 9 possible values. The steam controller uses a trackpad in its place which not only allows for 8 directions like a Dpad, but also acts as a button. So let's say that's one more button, even though it has potential for so much more.
Likewise, the left and right triggers do not act as buttons on the 360 controller, but as analog values ranging from 0 to 255. The Steam controller has an additional button on the full press of the analog stick.
Between the back paddles, the additional potential of the touchpads and the Gamecube-style trigger buttons, the steam controller has 5 more physical buttons than a 360 controller.
You can also configure a number of virtual buttons to the touchpads, so it really depends on how you count.
There are 4 shoulder buttons.
There are 2 back buttons.
There are 8 buttons in each track pad on the front.
In addition to this the steam controller allows switch keys (which allow you to hold down say back button and change what all the buttons on the controller do while its held down)
This means you can concievably have somthing like 72 buttons registered. (which is enough for arma 3 infact.)
Wait can those be counted as buttons? I mean the right thumb pad doesn't seem likely to ever function as a button, I guess the left one could, but that's 4 and it also doesn't appear to be ideal for button use.
That's awesome! Even if it has less buttons that could more than make up for it!
No each track pad has 8 button in them Basiclaly at north, south, east, west, NE, NW, SE,SW positions. So thats 16 buttons for just the track pads.
I mean you can't even see where the "buttons" would be on the right track pad.
I assume that's what the haptic feedback is for.
Haptic feedback.
