I think the Steam Controller is very much worth it. I've had mine for 3 years now and I use it for more games that I ever expected I would.
Honestly: there's hardly anything which you can't do with the Steam controller. However, I do think it's fair to say that it's not perfect. For example: if you play FPS games then the right touch pad may be reason for a serious adjustment in game style. It takes getting used to and it's not always as easy as having an analog joystick.
On the positive side: once you start to become better then you'll quickly notice that your results are also going way up. I'm still struggling sometimes (especially in GTA when I can't look around fast enough) but I'm also noticing that my aim is seriously improving.
I'm also a huge fan of this controller.
I had more trouble going from mouse to joystick aiming than I had going from joystick to touchpad & gyro. YMMV. It took some learning, but now that I'm familiar with touchpad & gyro, it's head and shoulders better than using an analog stick to aim with, and I don't ever want to go back.
