Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Is this any good for RPG games?
I have single-player RPGs in mind, which is what I play the most. I'm pretty sure mouse and keyboard is still best for MMORPGs, because of macros.

If you're talking about real-time RPGs like Skyrim and Witcher 3 and such, then yes it will work well - all those games were designed to work with a gamepad since most of them received console ports.

For CRPGs that involve a lot of cursor movement and don't have native gamepad support (Shadowrun, Underrail, Avernum, etc), I'm not so sure. I don't know how well the Steam controller is at managing a mouse cursor through an entire game.

Yea, jus like answer above, it works well with RPG but if you want to play CRPG or MMORPG then you'll have to get used to it

It depends on the MMO, but it works great for Guild Wars 2, i have almost everything mapped to the controller, the only thing i need to do at the keyboard is chat.

It also works great for Shadowrun and other turn based games, those have shortcuts too, you know, and moving the cursor feels great on the Steam controller.

The only games that i don't like to play with SC are RTS games and such.

I use my steam controller with every single genre of game. As a couch gamer for years I would never touch RTS games or ARPGs since it was was hassle to play from the couch. With the steam controller those games are super easy to play with the right profile.

For RTS games I usually use the right pad as a radial menu for control groups (I can long press a button to create a control groups and single press to recall that group) and mouse regions for abilities, so the mouse jumps to where all the onscreen buttons are.

For ARPG games I usually use a mouse regions on the joystick + an inner ring binding of the mosue button. This will usually result in an emulated analog movement (I use that settup for both shadow runner and path of exile)

With some clever thinking applied to the right profile the steam controller works great in all situations

Some of the older ones or ones that require only KB/m can be a little fiddly to set up but they all work perfectly well with a little time spent on figuring out how you want your config to be. I have played diablo, torchlight, sacred, dungeon siege, Neverwinter nights and maybe five or six more and they are all beautiful with the SC. That hardest to set up was Neverwinter nights, just a lot to bind and the old OpenGL 1.1 disallows the overlay from working. Otherwise, it's a treat.

The replies have been so good, I think I'm gonna get one of these. Although maybe for Christmas, we'll see. Thatnks to all.

If/when you end up grabbing one. Don't forget we are here for you when you inevitably have a question or need general advice. Good Luck and happy gaming!

What's wrong with your RTS gaming people? I just assume you're trying to use mouse emul when "Mouse Region" works the best for it. I've been playing Diablo "clone" Path of Exile for 1k hours already with SC - GGEZ :)

Macros isn't really a problem. I'm currently using Autohotkey for that. Hotkeys goes to SC config.

As for me SC is good for everything. That's the most all around ultimate piece so far (IMO)

dodger Could you tell what RPG you have in mind? You might get specific, direct answer ;)

I just can't get used to mouse region. I even played path of exile with normal mouse emulation and it worked fine. RTS games though I don't know why.

Although, I suck at them no matter what control I use so that's probably why.

I play so many RPGs. Currently playing Kingdoms Of Amalur, might replay Skyrim after that, then maybe Fallout New Vegas, or maybe the last mass Effect game. And on and on. I had seen a comment in another discussion where somebody did not like using a controller with FPS games, which is what triggered my questioin about RPGS. Like I said, the feednack on this has been very good, so I think in the near future I will get one.

Most of those games are designed with a controller in mind so you shouldn't have any problems with them. Even if they're keyboard and mouse games with no controller support, you can still use the steam controller to pay them and it will work fine.

As for someone not liking FPS games with the controller, that's personal preference, I don't like RTS games with the controller, but that doesn't mean someone else can't pay them perfectly fine.

And with a little practice I'd probably be good at it too.

I have played through Mass Effects initial trilogy (can't play Andromeda on my potato PC :steamsad:) with all DLCs using Steam Controller and god had a lot of fun! I've tried to play it using xbox controller long time ago but it was a bad idea, it's not hard to play with controller but it's awkward enough to drop it for me. I have been trying every game I had with controller via Xpadder before, I like to play with controllers, and some games just won't work as you want no matter what you do. Steam Controller is a saviour. Imagine that some guy have been playing on PC intensively and didn't touch his mouse for 1.5 year even once! I packed my mouse into the box, and do everything with SC (except occaional drawings with my Wacom tablet :)

One of the great things about the steam controller is the more you use it, the better you become at making profiles for it. I've owned one for almost 2 years and occationally I'll have a brain storm that opens up profiles even more. It may be hard to believe but once I'm done making a profile for almost any game, I almost always end up with un used buttons.
