Put the cursor in your character's face.

Select another character.
You'll see the P1 thing going to the character you selected.
You can change In-Game Battle Menu pressing start too.
Or not, it's a new game. I'm a Tales of Fan and gamer, but this is a new game and I don't know.

Kyouken is right !
You can switch characters in the menu out of battle => Just go on the char you want to control and press "Y" on the controller.
Sounds like you're doing it wrong. Changing characters in battle only lasts for that battle, nor does changing control style automatically confer 1p control to the character. What it sounds like you did was try to switch characters by switching Sorey to auto, then switching Rose to manual, which doesn't work (it'll just make you still 'be' Sorey, but he'll be in auto, while Rose is controlled by the non-existant player 2).
To fix it
>go to the menu (field menu, not in-battle menu)
>go to artes and set Rose to Auto
>back out to the top menu and use your confirm button (probably A) on Sorey and then Rose (which should switch her to 1p)
>go back into artes and set Rose back to manual.
For future reference, though it isn't (and never has been) indicated very well, the semi/auto/manual settings are for the player that corresponds to the character slot, NOT for character it's on, so the only time it's necessary to touch those is if you are adding/removing another player or aren't comfortable with the setting you're on. To further add to the confusion, there is only 1 default party order in this one and you have to reorder the players to the character slots instead (indicated by the 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p in the menu), which isn't quite so intuitive as previous games.
I always played as Tear in ToA, cause Tear is the perfect waifu!
Understatement of the century. Thanks for the pointers though!
