ARKitect

This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best base for the week. Survivors will need to upload their screenshots to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

We’ll be judging the bases not on the quality of the screenshot, but on the unique designs, functionality, and the use of in-game tools available to you! At the end of each week, the screenshot for the best base will be featured in our #ARKitect section of the Community Crunch!

The #ARKitect award for Community Crunch 20 goes to…

#ARKArt

The second contest which will take place is for the #ARKArt award! This is a title given to the Survivor who has created, in our eyes, the best piece of art for that week using our new Per-Pixel painting system! Similarly to #ARKitect, Survivors will need to upload their masterpiece to the Community Hub, both the Artwork or Screenshot section will suffice and then also post them in the designated thread, it’s also possible that we’ll see the screenshots in the hub but posting them in the thread will ensure that they’ll be spotted!

Workshopper Spotlight!

Workshopper: mikokalimo

Survivors, this week we’re joined by mikokalimo and they’re here to answer some questions and talk about their mods with us! Thanks for joining us! Do you think you could introduce yourself to the community, and let us know about what you’re currently working on?

milokamilo:

Hi Dear Mates, my name is Kamil and I'm a fan of dino-games and of the joy of modding for many years :]. My biggest project for the abundant ARK world is called “Many new items…”, while it’s name evolves with it’s more and more various content.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=511168000

I have always been dreaming about two things in a perfect game: the realism of gameplay, that will make it very various and never boring; and the abundance of content: that will make it even more various and interesting :].

ARK was a great choice for me then, yet I still see many more possibilities to extend its world and this vision together with the passion for creating, brought me to Ark Dev Kit tool and I began working on my mods. In the project I’m introducing tonight, I am focusing on adding content; there’s never too much of that, right? ;]

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=518957472

I’m still learning new things about modding ARK and during the process I will do my best to create something cool and share it with other players. So it first began with cool cosmetic items, like the beloved ‘cat-hat’; a scalp from a tiger being used as a warm hat and then I wanted to make some really useful melee weapons, that will make close-range combat much more useful and so I prepared a katana sword and a warhammer that have pretty unique function in gameplay.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=517087740

I’m actually also focusing on new, more ambitious branches of modding now, but more on that a little later ;).

Haha, teasing already! Can’t wait to hear more about it then Kamil. So clearly you’ve got a lot of plans for your mod and you say you’ve experienced the joy of modding for many years? Can you tell us what you’ve worked on before? Is this your first experience with the Unreal Engine?

milokamilo:

I don’t actually have a lot of experience, it’s more so that it’s spread a lot across the years however it’s never too late to learn new things :]. To be honest, this is my very first experience with the Unreal Engine 4, or any other that is so modern. Luckily - modding mechanics generally stay similar to how it was in the older games, even the good old Carnivores series… (Yes, the common passion of the years when we were young :P)

I starting modding with simple text files for the Carnivores series however was encouraged by the Game’s community that showed me it’s not dead yet. This allowed me to master creating textures, 3D models and animating. I ended up making a lot of brand new Dinos, weapons, maps and I always loved to find out something completely new to add to the game and was successful in that too. It was a result of a lot hard work really :). I have a lot of passion about modding and it’s hard to describe the results or the joy for it, for the results it’s just better to see! As time went by I’m now working on ARK.

That’s very impressive! Can you tell us the process of how you come up with an idea and then begin working on it’s implementation?

milokamilo:

Well I’m trying to use my free time in the most effective way possible. When I come up with an idea, I generally start to make all the visualisations and calculations in my head - once I’ve got a general idea of what to do, I then do some research to find a way to get the most desired effect in both efficient and good-looking way. I do my modelling using a program called Maya 2014 and I use the simple tool GIMP for textures. Animating is in my plans for close future :]

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=511468202

That sounds pretty cool, it’ll be exciting to see some new animated models done in mods! Don’t think there are many that have started on that just yet :). Earlier you mentioned that you were working on some more ambitious branches of modding, would your plans for animation be related to that?

milokamilo:

You’ve got me here Jat :P Animating is a very important part about creating new creatures! There are so many possible cool creatures to add (Even the ARK team cannot make EVERYTHING we can imagine :P)

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=523008668

And so for now I am using the standard animations for the dino-subclasses I’m adding, but for the future projects I plan to do a lot more. There are a few ideas I have for new creatures, right now I have made prepared the Machairodus cat and Jurassic Park-style Raptors! We’ll need to see what more I’d be able to create.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=520370689

When I have more time to master ARK’s animations and then I’m also working on something which I promised the players. more armours for their dinosaurs! For now I’ve actually created metal armour for a sabertooth, the people have requested more so I’ve plans for much more :).

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=520295192

That’s fantastic! Definitely one to look out for. We know how much people love their Dinos and seeing an armoured one is super cool! You’ve advanced pretty well in your mod so far, do you have an overall goal for it?

milokamilo:
I really love modding and I am ready to expand the mod more and more with time; I don’t really have a goal as the possibilities are constantly improving and the only limit is our imagination and well the end of the world :P

Haha great answer! Looking forward to see what your imagination leads you to create! Now as someone who has done a fair bit with the Dev Kit and modding so far, do you have any advice for new workshoppers?

milokamilo:

Some advice? First thought was to run away and go fishing! :P - Just remember that with your work and determination you can learn and achieve, don’t give up - even if there’s a lot of trouble and difficulty getting started!

Inspirational! Really appreciate you taking the time to speak to us Kamilo, I know you’ve got an early day ahead of you so we’re very grateful. Is there anything you’d like to wrap up with?

milokamilo:

I think I made a pretty nice and optimistic ending there ;)! I’m pretty eager to add in some more fun-stuff to the mod so definitely check it out! I didn't mention the fact that the mod is stackable and we've got throwable, stackable sticky-dungballs! Not to mention the poop is poopular ;] and thanks for featuring my mod! Hope you guys come check it out!

Oh, HUGE thumbs up on the Pachyrhinosaurus! This is exactly the kind of dinosaur I wanted added! EXTREMELY excited for it! Seeing as how Styracosaurus got rolled in with Trikes, this is my second favorite ceratopsian! Big props to the devs!

So let me get this straight, this game will eventually have a Pachyrhinosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Megaloceros, Megalodon, Megapithicus, Giganotosaurus, Gigantopithicus, Parasaurolophus, and Paraceratherium.

Damn you, Latin, and your limited prefixes!

Can't believe we won the ARKitect award this week. I guess my signs and overall theme really paid off. Thanks for the kind words and for anyone who wants to come join our little community, check out our group page!

We will be holding a contest of our own in the next couple of weeks with a couple of copies to giveaway to give back. Just need to think about what hoops to make potential candidates jump through ;-)
