I generally don't transfer the actual character, I create a new player character on the next map. I then transfer items and tames in cryopods to the new character. I play on multiple maps, and switch frequently. I find it's much quicker to just transfer stacks of special/rare items like kibble, tranq darts, etc. I have blueprints for making copies of super high level ascended gear, and generally make those copies on genesis 2 where it's really easy to get resources. If I start a new map, the blank level 1 character gets a whole care package to get them outfitted.
Be aware you can only have one character per map. If you transfer a character from another map through the obelisks/mission terminals, it could overwrite an existing one.
There are occasional glitches where characters can be lost or corrupted by transfer, which is why I say make a backup first, just in case - that way if anything does go wrong you can swap the backup files back in and revert to your current save state as if nothing ever changed. But those bugs shouldn't affect you all being well.
