You can only play with Epic, Xbox can only play with the win10 version.
so if i download ark from the xbox store would that work?
Steam= Can only play with epic. Epic players are restricted as well to dedicated servers(ie no non dedicated), -crossplay setting enabled, and no mods can be used.
Xbox= Can only play with Microsoft Store purchased Win 10 UWP version of the game. Essentially, Universal Windows Platform (UWP) is a closed platform for xbox and ms store folks to play together only.
Playstation= closed platform to itse.f
-Any- other "what about/what if" combinations will not work.
As for server availability on steam, dont use the in game server list system it is a broken mess and has been so for many years. Instead use the battlemetrics website to search through the 30,000+ available unofficial servers. However, you and your friend will not be able to play together unless he gets a steam version or you get the xbox/ms store version to play. But remember, xbox/ms store folks cant play mods(thats steam only.
