Complete newbie got a skill point question
Hey :) I am completly new and rn play singleplayer to learn the game a bit. I just wanted to ask about the skill points. What kind of skill points are good and which are useless? I would assume that weight is useless probably because my dinosauriers can also carry items I guess right? I don't have one yet so idk. But anyway I hope you guys can help me answer it.

In my opinion.

Weight , Stamina , Movement Speed are the most important stats.

Very helpful but optional : Health , Melee Damage , Fortitude

Borderline useless : Oxygen , Food , Water

weight is probably the most important stat right besides hp and speed.
You don't always have your dino and have to get off one very often.
Not to mention you won't always have a dino and sometimes you have to gather by hand etc and having to constantly put stuff in your dino is gonna slow it down alot.

Hp is a no brainer , with 100 hp you are super easy to kill , if you dinos are big fall damage will literally kill you when getting off them.

Speed is super important not just for mobility but for taming and running away.

Food and water are meh , ussualy a waste of points.

Oxygen is a waste , it gives you some swimming speed but in meh at best, handy early when you don't have scuba gear but that's it.

Fortitude is very important aswell , it gives you resistance to temperatures and torpor (very good in pvp , okay in pve)

crafting skill is odd, it improves crafting speed but ONLY in your inventory and makes the items you craft from found blueprints better ,it's good if you have alot of it but it's not worth it to lvl it up that much unless you want to craft a really good blueprint , and if you do find such a blueprint just use a mindwipe and put everything into crafting skill.

Stamina is okay , a bit of it is always handy, alot of things use it.

Melee Damage is meh , it's good early game but later you will stick to ranged weapons as it's MUCH safer and more effective.

Another quick question. I got a dodo now those little bird things. And in the options I can deactivate or activate that it can harvest resources and also the resources from dead bodies. But it doesn't do anything? I'm assuming it's cuz a dodo is too small to farm resources and also doesn't attack dead bodies cuz it doesn't eat meat right?

yeah , one option is for harvesting overall , example: a raptor can eat a body and get meat and hide , if you turn it off it won't gather anything but will still destroy the body , the other option is for items from dead bodies , example: some dinos drop stuff like their special trophy drop or some resources tools , now your dino won't transfer them to it's inventory when killing such a creature and they will stay in the corpse.

Health, Weight, Movespeed, 1 point fortitude to survive 1 troodon hit. Use mindwipe tonic all crafting skills if you want to craft from blueprints or make custom food/drink notes. Then reset to normal stats again after that. Stamina is useless because stimberry / energy brew / lazarus chowder (for underwater) exist.

Weight is not useless. To me, it's one of the most important stats. In single player, my minimum weight is 400 or higher.

In the beginning, if your weight stat is too low, you can gather materials and reach the point where you're so overloaded you can't even move anymore. You'll end up dumping out half the stuff you just gathered.

Later on, in mid to late game, I carry a LOT of gear. Since it's singleplayer, I don't worry about anyone jumping me and stealing all of it.

Some of it is just weapons and ammunition, but I'd say the bulk of stuff I carry is just for taming creatures. Kibble, tranq darts, bolas, etc. I carry this stuff around all the time. I am always prepared to stop instantly and start basic the basic knockout tames. Never know when you find some super high level tame, or a rare tame. Or, just a cool color dino you want for breeding.

I also prefer to use taming pens when capturing creatures. Keeps them from running off halfway across the map.

So I have to have extra unused weight cap so I can pick up whole stacks of dinosaur and behemoth gates/frames and build a pen quickly. These things weigh a LOT.

Alright thank you :) I just tamed my first dodo by punching him with my fists lmao.

It very much depends on your playstyle to be honest, and also what game mode you're playing. Some people prefer to have a lot of HP so when you get surprised by a dino you can survive it's attacks, where others invest in speed or stamina to run away from creatures and rely on their being observant to spot the threat before it jumps out at them. And if you're playing PvP that'll add a whole different set of considerations compared to PvE.

Myself, I value these stats, for the following reasons:

*) Weight: I mostly play solo, and even when I'm with friends I tend to be the builder of the group, so I'm constantly lugging around foundations and walls to construct our bases. Also, I tend to overprepare when going out into the wilds, and bring everything plus the kitchen sink along with me, so I need plenty of carrying power for all my equips, ammo and such.

*) Stamina: I prefer to level this instead of speed. Most creatures (except very fast ones like raptors) you can outrun even at base running pace, so having a lot of extra speed isn't that useful imo. Whereas it doesn't matter if you have all the speed in the game, if you run out of stam too quick so you're exhausted and can't run, you're dino chow. So I get stamina so that I can run for a long time, long enough to lose the creature chasing me or find a herbivore somewhere in the area that I can run past, and the predator will switch to attack the herbivore and leave me alone.

*) Fortitude: Many will tell you this stat is useless. I strongly disagree. It aids in resisting temperature extremes, reduces the speed of food and water depletion, and increases resistance against getting knocked out too. Sure it's effects may be small, but it's saved my life and made survival a whole lot easier for me on many occasions, even for simple things like resisting the excess heat of your high tier flak/riot armour so you can wear more defensive equipment while in the wilds.

*) Oxygen: I admit I'm a little biased on this, because I play my games with a swim speed multiplier which removes the swim speed nerf the devs made a few years ago, so oxygen makes me go much faster than vanilla. Also I use mods which require underwater resources long before you get access to scuba. But even without those, I would still say oxy is a pretty useful stat to have...with lazarus chowder you can stay under the waves quite some time.

HP is never a priority for me, because I am constantly riding dinos so they can take the hits for me, and on the rare occasions I'm not riding I try to be extremely observant and avoid agro/damage rather than tank it. I only ever put levels in health when I'm extremely high level and have some points to burn.

Melee same - if I'm fighting things myself something has gone seriously wrong, I'm letting my tamed creatures do all the battling so I have no use for melee myself.

And I never bother with food or water either, the base stats are sufficient for those when you know what you're doing.

Played for 7k hours still doesn't know how to use stimberries / energy brews. :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

I prefer not to use up all my water. Depending on the map/area, a drink can be hard to come by when you're dehydrated. But if you just use your standard stamina rather than the berries etc, your water drains much slower.
