*Note that point score doesn't relate to actual taming process... 6 hours of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around later with a LVL8! was rediculus.
Here's how I did it.
-Agro'd on 1x1 foundation with argent
-Used STONE WINDOWS (Not doors)
-Watched his little trapped-jitter dance and learned the pattern of how long he stays put in position.
-Used MEJO berries until 60% tame
-Finished tame with 2 Titano Boa Egg Kibble
A LOT of trial and error. I found if he agros just run away and let it smack the walls, it'll calm down eventually.
It IS frustrating but not impossible.
Just wait for that sweet spot to throw mejos at it the second you can and get the hell out. Once fed wait at least 10-15 seconds and feed again.
3/10 annoying tame
10/10 fantastic mount.
This guy beat the crap out of a bronto at level 8

I haven't given up and I'm still trying on this guy. I had him to about 35% tamed, but then I accidentally aggro'd him so I waited a long time and he reset from beating the stone walls, but his taming bar also reset. :/

Here's the "cage" i made which is 2 x 2 stone and based on the suggestion above, Instead of door frames i'm using window frames

yeah like I said, took 6 hours of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around and learning it's dance. Agro on walls usually times out about 5-15mins, it's silly but that's the price.
I've found that with a bird, if it doesn't agro off the wall, just jump on the bird, smack it once in the face to show it who's boss and wait for it to de'agro again.
Sure you might ruin that tame but it sets you up for another attempt as it puts more focus on YOUR agro.
It will again return to smacking the walls but it'll lose interest eventually.
Keep at it.
It's painful but it's possible.
Also something to note, server lag does play a part in failed tame. Watch it's bobbing and movement. if it looks like it's staying too still, stay back. Even though you're moving fine it seems to disregard current player/AI placement points momentarily and acts as if you were in its hitbox if you're too close, wait for it to have it's back to you and still be actively bobbing/wandering while trapped. Jump, mash E, retreat.
you'll get it.
If you have a friend, get them to place the last window after you agro it in, cage it in a 1x1 on a single foundation. It restricts it's movement and gives you more chances to tame from behind.
Honestly though have 2 foundations but confine it to 1.
1 foundation for ape, 1 foundation for you to be able to jump and mash E and sneaky feed through the window hole.
Try to feed when it has its back turned or facing the side so you can approach from the side-rear kind of.
....enjoy your new ape.
it's super slow in the beginning. At around half he'll really start to speed up.
Back to zero. D:
It happens, just keep at it.
Again... 6 hours on a level 8
It's annoying as hell but the monkey bro itself is well worth it once you get it tamed.
I dunno if this is just bugged or if I'm doing something actually wrong here..
I have been feeding him constantly mejoberries, non-stop. Everything was going fine. (Please excuse the crude graphics, I had to set it low)
Here he is at 98% Taming! Almost done!

Then... after feeding it a bunch more, I started to wonder why it had not tamed yet. I checked the taming bar and it's going down!?!?!
From 98% down to 40%

Down to 25%

arghh.. I've been at this the whole day. You can see his taming effectivement is going down the whole time.. and it's not starving...
Am I going insane here or what?!?!
I think I need to take a break.. LOL
If its a non violent tame they should make it similar to the Ithy (Ie. they should be friendly since you are hand feeding them) or else just make it an old fashioned knock out and tame.
Im all up for them having different taming mechanics for different species, but this makes no sense.... You wouldnt try hand feeding a wild animal that wants to kill you :)
I had 19 kibble prepared with 5 left over after taming. Taming started at LVL64.
When it agro'd I moved away from the area for a minute, came back and then replaced the door frame it was smacking with another and it instantly calmed down. I left it a little time to settle completely, watched it's movements again and continued tame. (I had to replace about 3 walls during the tame which went rather well)
Here's some screenshots on how I have it laid out. As suggested, door frames are more convienient than windows so it seems. Best of luck if you haven't got one yet :)

I created a new thread describing the layout I used which was based upon feedback from the players in this thread.
Thanks everyone for helping! I can't wait until I tame the next one.
@CyberDust, how did you upload your pictures so that they're displayed as thumbnails here?
