I would get used to Ark by playing on the Island and waiting the the DLC to be on sale. They are easily well worth the price, but don't rush playing on the DLC maps if you havent played much. Who knows, you may just not like Ark enough to buy the DLC.
There are also some free maps from the community that WC officially added as maps. Ragnarok, The Center, Crystal Isles and Valguero are also free official maps you can play on if you don't like the island much.
There is no need to buy any expansions that would help you on The Island Map as a new player, at least for a long while. There are some free maps which may provide you with an easier start, such as Ragnarok or Valguero. Once you are ready to complete end game content, you'll need to collect Artifacts, and some maps are easier to get them than others, but no need to worry about that now. Artifacts are generally located in very difficult areas in all cases.
The new game mechanics and creatures on other maps are mainly designed for those who already have a basic game knowledge and are looking for more of a challenge, so they're made to be played in order for the most part.
Scorched Earth-no ascending and its a story map, never addressed to date. New creatures there are boring unless you just want to collect. The unique feature is the weather and heat but anywhere in the middle of the map never goes above 80 degrees anyways so it trivializes the features of the map. Wyvern are its highlights but the trench is just boring and one type is just garbage.
Aberration-Runs like complete garbage with overspawns of fish and stuff along the river in green zone. Bugged nameless that pop in your base with charge light going 24/7. Rockwell fight is the best feature on that map but its painful just being able to get there with all the bugs going on and frame rate lockups.
Extinction- Again bugged to death. Without mods for Orbital supply drops you are not going to complete half of them because mobs spawn inside the mesh and terrain, never addressed. Clipping issues throughout the entire map. Caves that have giga's inside the walls stuck. Arguably the best creatures in the game (Managamrr) (Gatcha) Orbital Supply drops do not adhere to server rules. If you lower for small server you still end up with yellow mobs 150+ red at 250+ and purple at 300+. Titans can still be cheesed to date with broken mechanics.
Genesis- No point in talking about it its just a crappy designed map that hands out loads of ascended freebies for shooting a bulbdog in a hoop.
Genesis 2 the best DLC map because its the newest and their baby so they continue to polish it.
All the old ones are neglected and not worked on but meshing for the pvp base because Ark only balances and patches based around cheating and exploiting.
Nice troll! Almost had me there, thought you were serious for a second there.
