I would wait until a sale is on as full price is a little bit high with the bugs.

The game is great but the bugs at full price might sour the experience.

i just tried loggin in to ASE and found very few servers active and the ones that are, only have a couple of people on it, not sure how accurate the player count is but according to the steam players in game shows 34k people, but im not seeing that.

Common question, clusters do not register players from all the maps and they could be spread out. if your looking with Ark for populated servers dont as it will never register all 60,000+ servers to give you accurate figures. Use-
https://www.battlemetrics.com/servers/search?game=ark

But nice Hijack

Also most people don't play on official servers. But yeah, despite the age and declining playercount of ASE it's still miles better than ASA

There are no official servers any more.

@OP: You should be aware that this game is extremely buggy, and will sometimes irritate you almost to the point of rage quitting. It also takes no prisoners, and has an extremely steep learning curve.

Having said that, when it does work properly it can have flashes of brilliance which can keep you coming back for more. I'm really not a fan of hardcore survival sims, but it's managed to keep me occupied for 7.6k hours...it's gotta be doing something right to achieve that.

I'd recommend considering carefully, and look up some gameplay videos etc. online first, to see whether you feel it is worth the investment. However it is definitely worth thinking about, as it might potentially give you a lot of entertainment.

If you do decide to pick it up, be aware that one of it's strengths is it's customisability - the devs opened up a huge amount of options for us players to adjust, to change up the gameplay however we like. So if there is something you don't like about it, or you want to make it easier/more difficult somehow, chances are there is a config setting that you could tweak to make it play more to your preference. Feel free to ask here on these forums for any aid or suggestions, as there are a number here who are helpful and try to assist people with any issues they may be having.

Not unless it's on a HEAVY discount.
They've abandoned ASE in favor of doing a half-assed re-hash with ASA (Which you should not buy at all in it's current form)

The bugs ASE has, are going to stay, modders will probably abandon it, and eventually Snail Games will probably try some shady stuff to force people into ASA.

They're never gonna get the majority of players onto ASA as long as it requires a 40 series card to run

I'm seeing 4090 users getting sub 60. it's absolutely awful.

ASE isn't abandoned, it's just _done_. Game was huge for almost 10 years. One of the most frequently played games on steam, and it's still widely played even now.

Years of content waiting to be played. You can wait for sale, get a bargain. This game has offered years of enjoyment... and yes, some frustration with bugs. But they're fixable. Make backups and use admin commands, they're fixable.

Won't let me quote you for some reason @ Laserak, but

No. Modders won't abandon ASE. A few of the major mods (like Additions) will only be updated for ASA; but then there are mods like Eco's suite that will likely never come to ASA, due to her quitting modding. People still make mods for the original Skyrim lol, ASE will have support for quite a long time.

so i think according to the discussions still buying ase for a survival player isnt bad .

Do you want to play a game with only one map, one map's dinos, one map's blueprints. Or a game with a bunch of maps, dinos, tech, etc

"done" still a buggy pile of crap that can erase things in obelisk, drop you though mesh, and has awful frame pacing, but yeah it's 'done'.
