Unofficial servers and single player will not be affected in any way, so long as ASA releases on time at the end of this month.
As Hermit said it's only the official servers that have been taken offline. Single player an unofficial servers remain untouched.
I have 7k hours on official servers and for me it wasn’t really about the game as a whole but the community and friends you make, people you trade with, and the ridiculous stats people breed.
I’m glad official servers are done. I can play other games now without the worry of feeding my animals and refreshing my base.
Ark 2 has been delayed and will not be coming out for a few years yet. But yes, it does look like quite a deviation from the original Ark formula we fell in love with.
Ark Ascended, the remaster of Ark Evolved, is coming out in less than a month. That game has the same gameplay that we are used to from the original title. Purportedly it also has lots of new features, such as better dino AI, a revised building system, full crossplatform with mods using Overwolf, better graphics and physics etc. Plus a new story map DLC.
Does have to be said that a lot of the bugfixes they promised were also promised for Evolved, and they never delivered, but now are offering them behind a paywall of the revised game. Also given WC's history of promising much then delivering less, some wonder if we can really trust them to deliver on the hype. However each person would be wise to review the news and make their own decisions whether they think it is worth it or not.
But again, in addition to all of the above, Ark Evolved is still playable. It isn't going anywhere. You can still play single player or on dedicated/non-dedicated servers, and you can even download official server map saves so you can regain access to your old base and tames, and continue to play them as if they were still on the officially supported server.
1. Technically its not Ark 2017 as a point of clarification. Ark's been around since 2015 when it went into early access on steam then. The 2017 "release" was a marketing gimmic and the legacy-official previous server conversions were part of that marketing scheme.
2. Also you knew as far back as 2017 that impermanence of officials is a reality when the previous official servers have many immediately archived and the rest converted to legacy which over time so many of those legacy ones later removed.
3. Also the warnings and announcements over official servers shutting down had been going on for a while before the Sept 30th shut down.
4. Your 12,000 hours are not "down the drain". Server saves were made and archived and you can either attribute them to a single player iteration, non dedicated, dedicated-personal comp run, or a dedicated unofficial hosted service.
5. Only a minority of the player base played on the 1800ish official servers. The majority always played on the unofficial servers of which at the time of writing this (and before the shut down) are over 60,000+ in number. You've had 12,000 hours of time to choose to play on them with the majority either solely or diversifying between both it and officials too of course.
6. To clarify information for you (perhaps). This month Ark Ascended is being release, not Ark 2. 2 different games essentially with Ascended being a reiteration of Ark Survival Evolved and Ark 2 being story wise the sequel from the lore of ASE.
7. Ark 2 I'd highly recommend ignoring for the foreseeable future. Its very much not even being focused on by the development team. Ascended is and because if it doesnt succeed in sales on release, Ark 2 is not gonna happen as Snail games is in debt with 2 current outstanding loans coming due in December and January respectively and over 80% of Snails revenue has been reliant on the Ark IP. Ascended may make or break the future of the company.
8. Vin Diesel is a producer, in addition to a voice actor, for both Ark 2 and the Animated series project, which also is in trouble currently because Snail cannot find a platform willing to release the series on now for many months and compound by the both the actor and writers strikes putting so much other content from others on hold until both have completely been resolved(not just one).
All in all we get it, you're angry. Nothing you can do except:
-roll and adapt to the change by playing unofficials, single player, etc either with archived saves or just new/other game play/server iterations
-Shelve ASE until it matches your current sensibilities ( ie likely never)
- Shelve indefinitely
- Move on to and buy Ascended if you want to so vehemently play "official" servers. (Keep in mind it wont be 1800 in choice this month and will only be the Island map because the other maps, and assets that go with them are being staggered in release over the next 1.5-2 years).
All in all, you have choices to facilitate how you intend to reconcile your wants not matching the reality of the cituation. But aimlessly axe grinding at this point to other players(as you know devs intentionally do not interact on this forum in such capacities) is pointless outside of risky venting.
All in all, you have choices of course but ranting aimlessly with other players here is pointless as you should
Lol every game ends eventually bro. You bought this game like 5 years ago and whine that you dont get unlimited support? Thats pathetic. You can still play on unofficial.
Since Snail has owned Wildcard since Dec 2015 and this has been public knowledge since then, as someone in other threads has been more aptly stating, if you're supporting one, you're supporting the other.
Adding to that, I would suggest looking at how decisions directly attributed to those at WC has lead to controversies too. At some point you have to reconcile that it isn't some sort of victim-hood that should be attributed to WC in these regards.
