However, odds are that playing some of the free maps will make your progress easier.
As well as the Genesis 2 map, even though it's a paid DLC. However, I did like the Extinction map a lot, but probably because the main reason I played Ark to begin with is because I love Horizon Zero Dawn.
island - scorched earth - aberration - extinction - genesis 1 - genesis 2
Order of community official maps was:
The center - Ragnarok - Valguero - Crystal isles - Lost island - Fjordur
My personal favourite map with the also best balanced boss is aberration.
But if you play for the final bosses my opinion doesn't matter much, i don't like the boss fights of ark in general ;-)
(island - scorched earth - abberation - extinction - genesis 1 -genesis 2)
as far as i know.
fjordur was the last map that was released. but its the best in my opinion.
extinction has the orbital supply drops are like the beams of light drops, but give better stuff and you have defend the pods from waves of corrupted dinos in order to open them. one color (red i think) has endless waves but you only need 8 waves to unlock it. if you continue beyond that, the loot is supposed to get better, but i've only been able to do one and i was glad i stated my lightning wyverns carry weight, cause he was carrying all 2000 lbs. and that was ignoring the base building items
However as others have said above, the canon story maps all have their own unique bosses which don't appear on other story maps (with the exception of Genesis part 2 where one or two of the former bosses appear as minibosses in missions prior to the unique final boss).
Does " scorched earth - aberration - extinction - genesis 1 - genesis 2" only have 1 boss? or more? Do you actually suggest to go in order that you listed? the reason I named Extinction/ Fjodur is because we are only pveing and only in it for the bosses basically, so thats why we didnt want to play the maps with reused bosses and I thought the other maps only had 1 boss
The Island has three sub bosses and one final boss.
Scorched has one final boss.
Abs has one final boss.
Extinction has three sub bosses and one final boss.
Gen 1 has one sub boss and one final boss.
And Gen 2 has four sub bosses and one final boss - one of those sub bosses is reused from Gen 1, but the other three and the final are new.
Aside from Gen 2, all of the bosses are unique and not reused.
On the other hand, Fjordur has 1 reused boss and six reused sub bosses from other maps, although it does also have three unique bosses and one unique final boss. But you have to face all the reused bosses in order to reach the final boss, so you'd have to fight through them again despite having already done most of them on the Island.
And if you want to play the maps in "true" order of release date its:
The Island
The Center
Scorched Earth
Ragnarok
Aberration
Extinction
Valguero
Genesis 1
Crystal Isles
Genesis 2
Lost Island
Fjordur
Are 7 bosses in fjordur
would you recommend scorched earth after the island then? I feel as if only having 1 boss would make the map playthrough fairly quick... I think we got to play like 50-100 hours on the island, and if theres only 1 map on scorched earth wouldnt it not last as long?
and is it okay to start completely over (level 1 characters / no dinos) or should we be finding a way to bring dinos over?
Yes, I would definitely recommend SE after The Island. In fact, that's what we're doing right now in the co-op pve playthrough i'm doing.
50-100 hrs on The Island sounds like very little, unless you're like 10 players? But then again, I love building and always takes it slow, and always play on highest difficulty + alpha bosses. I would not recommend bringing over any tames from previous maps, at least I've never done that in my 1750 hrs of Ark.
Sure, SE is much shorter than The Island. If you rush it, it's really quick. 3 caves, 1 boss. But then again, how we play it is alpha, so you need better tames. Add to that we always build a huge base on each map, that takes time. Then there's the wyverns, clearing the nest and getting high lvl eggs. building a desert FOB to quickly clear wyverns. Taming rock elementals, taming mantis etc.
We're playing pve co-op 2 players and so far we've got like 90 hrs played on the SE and havent done 1 cave yet. I estimate at least 150hrs to complete this map on alpha (and i've done it twice before).
It's one way to define "you have finished the map" to kill the alpha boss
If you care just for the bosses upload the char and use the same char again and again for every map... that's also more or less what the story expect you to do.
I prefer starting every map from new. I think you miss at least 50% of the map experience if you start with an already fully developed char.
Esp. on maps like scorched earth where the first 2 hours are defintly some of the hardest you can get in ARK.
But that's ... like always in ARK ... up to you.
Thanks for all the info!
I have one question... all the bosses from the official releases :
"island - scorched earth - aberration - extinction - genesis 1 - genesis 2"
are all the bosses /sub bosses all unique and not reused? (besides from Gen 2)
