Dimetrodon does regulate your temperature as you stand next to it, but having one follow you in the lava caves would be impractical - keeping it alive would be difficult given the number of mobs down there, and it wouldn't cool you down while moving. But fortitude, food and cool armor are simple methods that you can do while on the move, and they won't be affected too much by the environment and monsters around you (aside from your armor getting damaged, but good battle tactics and taking some spares will counter that).
