In ARK, however, tames make nearly every aspect of the game easier. (You still can do much yourself.) They can carry much more, they will speed up your travels, they make dives in the seas (and you NEED to dive envetually) much easier. And you even can use them as mobile bases.
I'm not sure, however, if it is realy necessary to breed. But if you do, also boss-fights get easier. (But in SP-mode, normal tames probalby also could do the trick.)
But don't worry: the game has tools, which will ease breeding and holding your tames together, especially later, when you have masses of them. Namely: Breeding-Station, cryopods and electric leash. (from most late-game to most early...)
