The only better caver would be the dinopithecus, (the giant baboons) since they can leap and climb like crazy.
Theri
Baryo
I hate the wyv for PvE, personally. It's turning circle is terrible, and it feels so cumbersome and slow. I much prefer the manoeuvrability and speed of a rock drake for combat and travel, and a quetz for utility since it can turn in the air much quicker and has less momentum.
As to the bary though - it is not the best PvE dino overall, but it certainly is the best midgame mount, by far the best cave mount, and the best starter water mount too. Not only is it fast and powerful, as mentioned by others above, but it's tail swipe can even stun alpha megalodons!
For endgame, I'd say the best overall creature is a rock drake. Basically a rex but with the ability to climb and glide anywhere on the map, and with it's air darting move it can do it fast too. I've crossed from the Ragnarok castle to the deep desert in a couple of minutes riding one...if you get a fast glide and the right dart points they're crazy good.
Another contender is the shadowmane. I'm not as big a fan of them myself, but I will admit they're very good, bordering on OP. Extremely tough fighters, pretty fast, and their jump can take you miles, especially if you leap from a high place.
In the water, start with a bary, but use that to tame a basilosaur. Basilos are the best water mount for everything except the Moeder boss - they're tanky, can't be shocked by jellies/eels or grabbed by squids, and regen really fast when at the surface.
Certainly in small caves the bary is king though. Nothing else is quite so manoeuvrable, versatile, and small enough to fit in such tight spaces.
Yeah, the jump is insane, and they can also turn invisible. On crystal Isle, I use shadowmanes to steal wyvern eggs. They are hands down better then any other tame I had at the time, even better then the griffins which everyone kept recommending.
Shadowmanes can leap so high and fast, that they can easily vault up onto the top level of the desert rock formation where they lay their eggs. I can stealth past any flying wyverns. But for egg snatching, I don't even bother with stealth. Just grab egg, run, and _launch_ off the rocks into the ground below and head straight for the ocean. Once in the water, swim as long as you can and the wyverns will give up. And the shadowmane can _easily_ kill anything you run into in the water. The shadowmanes are so tanky, that I can survive being torched by multiple wyvern breath attacks (at least on crystal isles).
I even used the same tactics on other locations, like lost island. Getting the shadowmane to vault up into the niches where the ice wyverns lay eggs is a little harder, but can be done. It's like pitching pennies.
Therizins also make the the final boss fight on the Island easy. One of the biggest challenges in that fight is getting your dinos to the final fight without them falling off cliffs. You'll probably want to be riding a tank type dino, such as a Tek Rex or Yut, because therizins are easier to navigate through the cave without losing them due to falling off cliffs. And their dps is really good.
My favorite flyer is a wyvern, followed by griffin (because you can shoot from it while flying one, which is occasionally useful). Wyverns reached the top of my flyer list when breeding them was enabled. When playing my highest level toon, I mostly spend my time breeding dinos for boss fights. When looking for good breeding candidates, a wyvern is very useful for securing the area by eliminating any dinos who might interfere with obtaining a perfect tame. Or if you can't find a max level dino of the type you're wanting to tame, where plenty of low level spawns of the same type, you can easily kill them off, thereby improving your chances that a higher level one might spawn.
At high levels, both of the above are useful for obtaining other high level tames that you might prefer instead.
When playing a new toon, my favorite is moschops. Until you build a base you deem worthy of growing plants in crop plants, moschops are generally good at gathering berries. They are much easier to tame than therizins, since they are non-aggressive, and all it requires to tame them is to give some random food, which is specific to each one when it spawns.
Also high on my list for new toons is pteranodons. Having any flyer is better than not having any flyer.
Outside of caves, they're generally starting ocean dinos when sharks are not an option, they are excellent for assisting Basilosaur tames since they can wipe out the army of mantas extremely well compared to sharks. Baryonyx are however nowhere nearly as fast as practically any aquatic creatures that isn't Dunkleo.
They're good dinosaurs, but I think time just hasn't been kind to it, and there are now better answers.
They can grab almost anything and bring it back to taming pen pretty fast whitout aggro, they can be pack mule, travel mount and the list goes on as you know. Sure it has drawbacks and it's fine this way. i can live with that. Isn't it sooo satisfaying to see and HEAR the animation of a lightning beam? love it !!
Once i'll have bred rockdrakes myself i might love them too, but i doubt they will outshine the wyverns simply for the fact they are not as good at fighting imo. Their attack rate is so freakin slow, but i like their saddle and how they look.
Haven't checked the shadowmanes yet but they seem to be literraly OP as hell from what i've heard. a bit sad though that they just surpass everything so easily apparently. Maewings are also OP imo, they 'll get a nerf soon.
Best cavers by far and decent short range ocean explorers too.
For exploring Oceans I'd recommend the Sarco over the Bary though just because of the Sarco's natural swimming speed.
It can outswim everything that wants to eat you.
Other very good alrounder are
• thylacoleo is a bit stronger but without the ocean quality
• Daeodon, might be a bit boring, but it's almost immortal
• Megalania, a bit weaker and slower as the others but one of the best explorer in game.
With dlc creatures it's different.
The arguable best explorer is bloodstalker,
the best alrounder shadowmane
