It is best to start your water network from such structures and work back to the water source.
Rather than starting at the river.
This will save issues with misalignment.
Also several structures won't accept water if you have a tank in the network. So remove any tanks.
I've built bases before that didn't have direct access to water, and so used water tanks. Everything else worked fine, except for beer.
duh. Can you confirm that they actually get water from tanks?
I legit feel like I remember cheating the system by putting a tap attached to tanks near the barrels and irrigating them that way. This time I tested it by placing a barrel under a tap connected directly to the river, yet the barrel still shows "not irrigated". All the sources I looked up say you should be able to use taps to irrigate barrels, even the wiki. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong that makes taps not work.
I believe, however, that at one point the Structures Plus mod did have a setting to allow these structures to irrigate from tanks (though I think this setting has since been removed). Might it be that S+ also allowed for the irrigation from taps that the OP is referring to?
I think this might be what's going on. I used S+ for a while until I heard it wasn't being actively developed anymore, at which point I switched to SS. They must have removed the feature of irrigating from tanks and taps before SS went active. Strange that this feature is mentioned both on the wiki and on various Reddit threads, but your explanation is the only one I've seen that makes sense.
Welp, I guess it's time to start manually filling the barrels. I'd really rather not have to build a network of pipes all the way to a water source. Makes the build super ugly in my opinion.
