Are there any real advantages to taming the different light pets, or is it just to give variety?

They do have certain strengths. Featherlight has best charge range, glowtail recharges fastest, bulbdog has highest capacity, and goat is all-round average. But they can all be levelled how you wish so those strengths only really come into play before levelling.
