Elemental Node Help

So this is the first time I have seen a node. I was in the wasteland farming wood and it sounded like an earthquake. I look around and there is all this dark purple stuff coming out of the ground. I go over and hit it. The wording was something like "Elemental node wave 3 of 5 left". What is this? I didn't get anything for hitting the node. It just make the node weaker. I am on Extinction. Thanks!

Corrupted dinos are drawn to element, they feast on it. You have to fight them off and prevent them from eating it all - when you defeat all the waves, you get to harvest any that's left to get a bumper crop of element yourself. It's kinda like a tower defense minigame.
