Movement speed is your best friend in this game, right from the start. But you also need to invest in some of the others too. Early on I put a point or two in stamina, one in food, one in fortitude. Then its movespeed > health > weight > melee damage for a while. When those start feeling comfortable I double back and dump more into fortitude. I usually ignore oxygen and just make scuba gear later, tame a cheap dolphin when I need to dive.

You can also make mindwipe tonic and respec once per level as you're leveling up, if you make mistakes. Unofficial and singleplayer you can enable an option to do it as many times as you want.

If you're playing PvE I'd recommend 30 fortitude, 300-400 oxygen and plenty of stamina; stam over speed, because you can already outrun most big dinos in the game at 100% speed, but you will tire quicker than they do. Also do lots and lots of weight, so you can carry more equipment and build a base easier. I usually get speed to 25%, anything faster and I find it awkward moving around my base, then spend anything left over after all that in HP, stam and extra weight.

If you're playing PvP the best build will probably be very different though, and it also depends on your playstyle too. Find a setup that works well for you personally^^

dont waste your points on fortitude, food, oxygen, water, melee
(unless you live on the ice)

use the points in your best friend's:
hp
weight
speed
...thats all...

you can craft special "recipes" and reset your character with points on crafting speed to restore food, water and hp fast, and with dinos you don't need points in your melee

the first days i apply the points on weight, hp and speed and i can lvl so fast playing solo without help and without die
also you need to read about that...

fortitude, health , and stamina, oxygen if you like to dive alot early game.
If you get about 130 speed, you can outrun raptors on foot. That means you can kite pretty much anything into a taming pen on foot. I stop there, and put the rest into weight, HP, and fort.
