Nothing to fix, it is intended this way. On single player/non-dedicated servers, in order to reduce the load on the host's computer, areas of the map which are considered a different zone are unloaded from memory when the host moves to another area. So if the host enters a cave, the surface of the map ceases to exist, and if any player remained up there, they would fall through the floor to their death. It's done for performance reasons.
The only way to avoid it is to play your games on a dedicated server instead, since in this case the server loads all the map separately and the client does not have to do it itself. You can set up a locally hosted dedicated server on the same computer as the client, so long as you have a decent amount of RAM available. I would recommend doing this for single player games anyway, not just multiplayer, because it also avoids a number of other long-term bugs which the devs never bothered to fix too.
