I know what they really were, but I liked the idea of them looking like giant eagles. I mean they even changed the original argentavis sounds to eagle-like sounds. Now after all this time they want to change it again? Of course there will be people that don't want that.
What they could have done is go through with the changes, but kept the old argentavis model for a different bird. It may not be realistic, but how realistic are half of the creatures in this game anyway? Look at the thylacoleo. It was a marsupial, but made out to be a giant cat.
But the thyla is probably next on the chopping block. They'll probably make it a short, stubby little ugly mongrel. Similar to how I feel about the new argentavis right now.
A shadow of its former self!
This has nothing to do with the base game, look at the page for the classic fliers mod.
And the thing about the other creatures looking "ugly", bear in mind that the Utahraptor was feathered to begin with, and the Sarco didn't have those tooth-like marks at the end of its snout. The Spino I can agree on, though (except for the aberrant ones, they are just too shiney to look ugly).
