There is a waypoint mod that lets you setup markers in game.

S+ (structures plus) is the best overall mod.

Stack mod. Stackmemore (allows element transfer)

One of the reusable tools mod.

Rare sightings adds on going events.

Speedy flyers (best flyer speed mod, allows breeding)

S+ is a must. Stack mods are good as well. If you're lazy like me use Awesome Teleporters to get around.

This.... you need to be in 1st person when you open your map.

If i could only have 3 mods... it would be S+, Speedy Saddles and Automated Ark...... they cover almost everything qol.

I can't find speedy saddles when I search the workshop. Mind linking?

For a new player, no mods. Play the base game a bit first. That should be the case for any game

Becoming familiar with the map is a matter of experience and learning the map as you explore. Understanding the location of each obelisk and it's position to your base is a good start

You don't need a mod to mark positions on the map. While in 1st person mode and NOT riding a dino, press M to pull up the map. Once you are looking at it, press P and you can add a marker for the map. I tend to add locations for deep sea loot crates, wyvern nests, caves, etc.

As for mods I cannot play without, I wouldn't say there are any that "have to be" installed but Structures Plus does make a lot more tasks easier to handle, especially if playing single player.

The server I play on also has a mod called Super Spyglass but there are a lot out there with similar functionality. I used to use a spreadsheet to keep track of all my dinos' stats when I first tame them for the purpose of breeding. But with the spyglass, I can see what the base stat levels were when it was first born or tamed.

Just be careful not to go overboard with mods. You can easily run into issues with bugs in mods or game updates like special events that cause the mod to break. Other issues are mod interactions.
