If your on a mount they wont come up unless you'v already damaged them.
It's best to move 100-200m and hop off your mount and look around for any signs of one.
Tho that also means if your not wearing flak armor or higher your gonna be instant killed should they hit you before you get back on your mount.
They also have a bad habbit of falling out of the map.
They will target mounts, but only smaller ones. In the same way that a carno won't attack you while you're on a rex, d.worms won't attack larger predators either. But if you go on a smaller dino like a carno or such, they should appear.
However on Rag they are very rare whatever you may be riding. If you need resources from them, I'd recommend going to the Ice Queen cave instead. The male iceworms there drop the same resources, and they spawn ten to the dozen, and respawn in moments after being killed too.
