Take a look at one, watch the level up animation.
You'll agree with me immediately.
Featherlights are a close second though.
Bulbdogs have the highest base capacity.
Featherlights have the highest base range.
Shinehorns are more balanced.
Glowtails have the highest regen (regen also affects the drain speed)
There is no "best" glow pet, just whichever one you prefer.
Featherlights are pretty good, can fly (easy to get them back from somewhere) and are really cute. Tame these. with z seeds (best food the light pets eat in common)
Honestly they dont really differ that much, so it is really just personal preference. I used to name my bulbdogs derogatory names because they look like idiots, especially when you put a helmet on them. Dopey, dipstick, drooler, etc. Which led to some funny attachments to bulbdogs that would remain after I died and i would rush back to save and/or avenge them. FOR DIPSTICK! Or if they and I perished in Element, and they were a cherished pet, i would plant a sign at the river's edge for remembrance. Fun times. Abberation was an incredible map.
Makes me wonder if it was intended or not, I always thought it was.
Also, equip it with a flak helm and then watch it eat some food. The long tongue flicking out of the helmet's mouth slot is just hilarious XD
Not showing the difference could just as well be the glitch, and nothing in the game mentions these types of abilities to begin with, so the only way anyone would know is if they bothered to pay attention to it.
I think it might just be so that your shoulder pet can't inadvertently over encumbered you when you pick it up.
Anyway, to answer the question, they can all be leveled up fairly easily regardless of any beginning stat advantage, so whichever you like best or find first will work perfectly fine.
What you could do is have different ones dedicated to different uses. Bulbdogs for capacity/regent to protect the base, featherlights with high range/regen as living flashlights, that sort of thing.
There was a weight glitch where they would be born with 900 weight or something. I'll have to ask around about it because I never saw it myself.
I suppose I just never noticed that since I never bothered breeding bulbdogs, as they are the worst glow pet.
But a weight reduction of 900 is a lot
