Using a Manta
Hello,

I've just tamed some Mantas for the first time to explore the deep seas and it seems to take a ridiculous amount of time to actually descend/ascend, to the point where my large oxygen pool actually isn't sufficient.

Is there some trick to riding them that I am unaware of that makes them move faster up/down?

Just make scuba gear? What's the problem?

If you watch them in the wild they are slow. That is how they are buit. Go back to using the megladon.
I mean ever occur to you that is how the creature is meant to be?

Yes it did occur to me. It also occured to me that I might be missing something, which is why I ask :)
Two words: Lazarus Chowder :)

Two words: Scuba gear. :)
More costly :P

Besides, we could go one better than both and say - One word: Diplocaulus

Of course that doesn't include the manta part of the equation though...

Eh, Scuba + Mosa is still my preferred way to travel underwater. I couldn't be bothered to cook up laz chowder all the time and still have to go up to breathe when hunting for underwater loot crates.

I also think that Mantas are not made for deep sea exploration. There more like jet skies, meant to be used on the surface.

Yeah appears so... That was quite disappointing, they're pretty cool. Superfast and good damage. Ah well, settle for a plesio for now or even an ichty, those damn slow megalodons have gotten quite dull.

well yes, if you want fast, you'll want an Ichty. :) Mosas are quite fast too, relative to their size, of course, but they have the turning radius of a truck. So Ichtys are definitely more maneuverable.

Well I had an icthy but 4 mantas snuck into my base and killed that, 2 tamed mantas and a megalodon I had just tamed. Frustrating... But I gotta say, the deep sea terrifies me. Just like in real life even though I go scubadiving.
I would recommend a diplocaulus for simple exploration on the cheap though. You aren't gonna win any fights with it (unless your oponant is a trilobite) but with a bit of oxygen pumped it's got decent speed itself, and you can stay underwater for over half an hour without any food or scuba gear. Get a really good crossbow and you can even defend yourself from megalodons and anglers too. Plus you can climb onto shore if things get really bad.

Sorry if this is a bit late, the manta ray can climb and descend at a decent pace, but you have to do so while turning. You need to make a corkscrew to get up and down quickly.
A bit late? Over a year late
