Pretty much this, though I would also add that the direwolves tend to level their speed better and use their stamina /slightly/ more efficiently then the other two options.
Though I have taken out alpha rexes with direwolf packs, expect heavy losses in that scenario, and a one on one fight is a loosing proposition against the alpha rex with a direwolf even if you have 100% imprinting and breeding. We did manage to win a 3 on 1 against an alpha rex, but all 3 direwolves where ridden, mate boosted, and had 100% imprinting in that case and we were able to swap out to let one go heal when it took a bunch of damage by forcefeeding it meat.
Sabertooth
Pros:
- strong
- you can saddle it
- it can jump further than a raptor and a wolf and it is all in one better in crossing difficult terrain
- can access caves
- farms chitin and hide like crazy
- runs almost endlessly if you put some points into movement speed
Cons:
- more stressfull to tame, if you don´t own a quetzal and have a taming pen. Just look for a boulder where it can´t get onto. Still more dangerous, because of the environment they live in. You get surprised by other sabers or wolfs all the time.
- like mentioned before, the region where they spawn. Dangerous for new players without a flyer.
- it takes long until you are able to learn the saddle, I´m not quite sure, but I think you need to have lvl 34-50 to build it
Wolf
Pros:
- very strong attacks, due to the speed it bites with. They are slaughter machines if trained properly
- no saddle requirement, so it is ready to ride after tame. Good for beginners
- it is fast, has good stamina and can jump very well, by far better than a raptor and almost as good as the sabertooth
Cons:
- harder to tame due to its environment and its pack behavior; you barely find a single wolf
- no saddles available, which means no additional armor as well
Raptor
Cons:
- raptors are almost everwhere
- very easy to tame, especially since since you can bola them
- you can learn the saddle quite early
- can jump, although not nearly as good as the saber or the wolf
- relatively fast if you put some points into speed
- good use of stamina
Cons:
- Less hp than a saber, a good saddle and some points into hp are recommended
- weakest attacks in this comparison
So it all depends where you are and what you want.
I would always recommend a sabertooth.
If you want to tame a raptor, try to at least tame a lvl 100, the higher the better.
If you choose the wolf, put a lot of your points into hp, to counter the lack of a saddle.
I agree with Kirby about raptors though. If you can avoid them just do it. They're stupidly weak and have really bad hp. If you can jump right to wolf early on then go with them (getting a saber might be harder just because you'll need someone to make you a saddle.)
mid game -> wolf
end game -> saber (especially once you get a mastercraft saddle ...)
