Apologies, you're right, I should have been more clear. I meant you don't have to restart your savegame. Yes, you do have to restart the game client and load the world again.
Try building a foundation with a few walls on top of it, then delete the foundation from under them to leave them floating in the air. Does that work?
Even with the setting enabled you can't place walls/ceilings willy nilly, walls/ceilings need some form of foundation to snap onto initially. But as you said, once you've one ceiling/wall down you can get rid of the foundation and everything will be fine, the wall won't be destroyed if the setting has been enabled..
