Pegomastax... are they working as intended?
The Pegomastax...

I get the concept, it's supposed to be a rare dino that steals your items, and if you want your items back then you have to chase it down and kill it. It's a bit troll-ish to the players, but it's not a horrible concept really.

However...

1) They are not rare at all.

I have had as many as 4 of them attack at the same time. In open terrain like a beach, where you can lookout for them, it's sometimes impossible to travel anywhere without moving through some of them and surrendering some items. They are EXTREMELY un-rare.

2) You don't really have any chance to chase them down and get your stuff back.

Unless you happen to be on an Argent or 200+ Rex, you pretty much have to just let them have your stuff. You can't chase after them attacking them on foot, no human melee attack stands a ghost of a chance of actually killing a Pego. Pegos run FAST, making them hard to hit at all by hand. And if you're not on scorched earth, their tiny size disappears into folliage almost instantly. With their speed and size they are hard to hit at all, and like all of the new dinos they are extremely tough to kill. One took a very rare item from me, and I followed it on a Dire Wolf literally halfway across the map, picking up aggro from like 20 other aggressive dinosaurs, and still failed to kill it after managing to land half a dozen good hits on it. Chasing one and killing it is just unfeasible unless you have a super-powered mount or an argent that can pick the pego up and kill it in it's claws.

Out of the 50 or so items I've 'donated' to wild pegomastax, I've only recovered 2, and only when I had an argent with me.

3) When you are in folliage, or on a large mount they are impossible to avoid.

Pegos simply disappear in the further zoomed out view of riding a large dino. And in any sort of foliage or ground cover, they are just impossible to keep in view. This is when it is not raining, not foggy, and in broad daylight (ie: during the 40% of the time you can actually see in ark). So avoiding them isn't a realistic option.

__

If Pegomastax ran noticeably slower, were more visible (brighter colors perhaps?) and had about 1/4 their current health (or less) then they might function as advertised. But in their current state, they just force people to be even more reliant on fliers and take away an action bar slot.

__

SO, the TL:DR version:
Players must now keep the 0 slot free of anything useful, always, and have a constant supply of throw away items ready to stick in the 0 slot at all times. Oh, and never put anything valuable in a dino's inventory.

Is that really the intended effect Pegomastax are meant to have on gameplay?

Oh, and they steal from you even if you are just flying low too... that's pretty annoying as well.

Sounds good to me, they arent as bad as you make them out to be, and actually add a bit of challenge to the game.

Sprinting Human is about twice as fast as Pego. If you put points into movement, which you should it's even faster. Wild Pego has 473 sprint speed. That is quite slow.

But overall, they are just a nuisance that serves no other purpose. I've switched them out with dodos. Those at least drop eggs and look cute.

B-But they're so good at collecting seeds!

I think the it's just some background noise they threw in and that's why it came with so many other dinos. It's just filler trash that has no real relevance.

So...
"keep the 0 slot free of anything useful, always, and have a constant supply of throw away items ready to stick in the 0 slot at all times. Oh, and never put anything valuable in a dino's inventory. And if possibly just avoid using land dinos entirely"
is adding "challenge"?

It's not challenging at all. Challenge is when something is hard to do, like when you fight an enemy and barely win. This is not challenge, this is gameplay-limiting annoyance.

I don't think the pegos should be removed, but in their current state they are not at all 'added content' to the gameplay experience.

I'm currently enjoying the snow biome best, because there are challenges there which are actually challenging, and there's no troll-ish pegos or troodons in the snow.

I catch up to most of them and kill them. The only time I've failed at that is when something else immensely distracting is happening (such as a mount aggroing a ton of brontos or trikes).

WTF is op talknig about? My toon has a 130% run speed and i can easily chase them down, i have butchered every single one that has stolen from me. Not to mention after a few seconds they run back to you to steal more. Even if you dont have the speed pull out a bow or rifle and slap them in the mouth its eazyyyy.

keep mejos on the 0 slot and tame them if theyre low enough the first lot they take tames them

but they don't die until you hit them a lot.
granted, I've been on two new servers since they came out, so I haven't had "good" gear to go murdering with, and not at a level where i could pump melee really... but they seriously take a lot more to kill than makes sense. And they disappear really fast in folliage.
nevermind the fact that it's not uncommon to have more than one attack you, and then what do you follow?
TotallyUncool Jan 15, 2017 @ 9:47am
They steal from your mounts too? I was trying to tame several yesterday and they attacked both me and my wyvern. I never noticed them taking anything from my wyvern though (unless you count some hp).

Things they have stolen from me.
Tranq arrows, they were in the inventory. not on the 0 slot.
My pants... twice. Taken right off my body.
Flame arrows (on SE) five times. All five times I was on my bear.
Two spoiled meat from my dire wolf. I felt bad for that one.
Human feces... from my bear on SE my friend put on my bear as a joke.We found out when it dropped the loot bag.

From what I have experienced it will take things randomly from the inventory.Sometimes, it takes the first thing in the inventory.. other times somewhere else. Only put berries on the 0 slot when taming. Anything else will drop the tame bar. You will not lose TE... but the bar will drop. Discovered that with poop. Thought they like to steal... maybe they like to steal random things.

You can spam up your inventory with crafted Notes. They're basically weightless, and always only stack 1 high so they take up a lot of inventory slots. It can decrease the chances of them taking things of value if there's more than one pego and they steal beyond your 0 slot item.

It's just that all of the ways you deal with pegos are highly annoying. Not challenging, annoying.

Yes, this thread exactly. They are too troll-ish as implemented. If they were considerably slower moving and did not spawn in groups then I could put up with them, but as they are all they add to the game is frustration and anger.

It's for this reason that I have removed them from my single player games...only the second dino which I have deleted, the first being the wild giga for being completely and utterly OP beyond any semblance of sanity, and not balanced at all.

Therizinos do not need a nerf, troodons are borderline OP and could perhaps be reduced a bit but aren't utterly over the top. But the pegleg, that definitely needs some work.

I think all the therazine needs is to gain the capacity to lose aggro. They'll follow you to hell and back, they just stay mad eternally once you anger them. It really seems like a bug to be honest, I hope they fix that, because other than that therazines are fine as long as you respect them as one of the big bipedal fighting dinos.

Troodons... I disagree with ya though. They are waaay OP. Supposedly they have 200 base health... yet it takes fully twice as many hits from a 300 rex to kill a Troodon as it does to kill a similar level Dire Bear. Something's clearly not working right there. Troodons are basically the size of a dilo, with the damage and durability of an allosaur, torpor that puts scorpions to shame, and speed like a gali... and they often spawn in packs. They also have a bad habit of KO'ing a player, and then switching to attacking their mount, only hitting the player if they get close to waking up, so that you're locked in a torpor cycle and can't even achieve death to respawn to come back to save your mount. If i ran a server i'd remove both pegos and troodons until WC figures out how to balance them.

Personally I don't mind wild gigas, they're kind of a super-murder-death-boss-thing, but at least you can see them coming, and they make you think about designing a base that's safe from them.

I just had one of the birds attack me out of no where and steal my pistol.

I farmed for four days off regular rocks to get the metal to make that pistol.

It didn't drop it when I killed it.

Maybe if this "feature" is broken it should be disabled until it's fixed.
