Trilos on the beach are also a common early source of chitin.
If you're brave enough, killing something at the edge of a swamp can attract some dragonflies if you're lucky.
Otherwise, since ants mainly spawn inland a bit in the forest, it's hard to see them without your ground clutter at zero.
Either Redwood or Swamp -- preferably the border between both. You can do it however you see fit, of course, but this is one of the ways I farm for chitin when needed (along with cementing paste if on a frog). I would use a dino that can make a quick getaway (frog or pternadon) in case the swarm of insects gets out of hand. If the insects are in range when you kill something, they generally arrive in short order.
You can also farm chitin in some of the caves (sabertooth or raptor preferred in this case) but if the redwood and swamp biome makes you uneasy, the caves most certainly will.
Best way to fight them on foot is with a spear/pike, crouch and stab into the air.
They have a hard time hitting you while crouched, if you keep stabing wildly into the air you'll likely kill them without ever being hit.
