Give reasons please. Thanks.

Probs Mosa or Squid. Both are huge and powerful, and a good lvl one can tank almost anything. The squid can grab stuff too iirc, and this heals it.

Depends on what you want... Best mount for speeding around? Ichty. Best all around mount for fast travel and offensive capabilities, Shark. Best for raw damage? Squid or Mosa.

So there is no best, no jack of all trades that surpasses all.

Ichty, fast, high level can kill Sharks, you can shoot from its back and they are an easy tame

None: If you're high enough level to get 800 - 1000 oxygen and you wear scuba flippers you'll be faster than everything in the water. Doing this makes it super easy to tame water dinos, but it also makes you not want to use them after you tame them.
Hrodvalder has it. For instance, if you want to kill trilobites for oil pearls and chitin, a diplocaulus is the winner. There are some jobs for which a spinosaur or even a beaver will beat some of the things you're more likely to think of as a sea mount. You have to figure out what you want to do with one before you can figure out what's best to do that.

Early on for resource gathering - diplocaulus. Lets you stay underwater for ages without scuba gear.

First water mount to tame things - sarco. Faster than an ichthy at base speed, lets you eat, use your map, spyglass and crossbow on it's back, and can climb out of the water if things go south.

Best black pearl farmer - ichthy. Takes no torpor from eucry...the sea scorpion things.

Best fighter - plessie or mosa. Pleassie is faster so can evade attacks better, mosa is tougher so can tank them.

NOTE: The new squid may well have a role in any of these categories too, but I can't comment on that because I haven't tried it out yet.

For sheer killing power, mosas and squids. I favor squid for its mobility and ability to attack in any direction.

Cleared to the very back of the Lost Hope cave and on my way out everything respawned around me, anything less than a mosa and squid would have been toast.

Balance of speed, power and flexibility plesio is a excelent choice, especially with the relative ease of aquiring top tier platform saddles, they also are very good for transporting land dinos you own.

Thanks for all the help, I think I'll work on getting a squid.

Everything has situations it's good for- whenever I'm semi-afk in game (mostly when it's too cold for me to go outside, or there's zero visibility even at gamma 4), I study the wiki to try to figure out what's perfect for my current situation.

I don't want to derail the thread, but while we're on the topic of aquatic mounts, what's a good way to keep small piscovors fed like the diplocaulus or the pelagornis if you don't have a larger mount to kill fish for them?
I know the pelagornis can OHK and instantly harvest any small fish, but I get the feeling it won't be easy to fish with one.

Just stay close to the coast and spear fish.
If you have a Quetz even better, just hover above a pond and attack down. Works really well.

Other than that, get a shark. Really easy to tame and good all around.

Maybe I'm weird but I like the Anglerfish the best. Reasonably fast and tough, decent carryweight and that built in headlight is great. I usually have a shark on follow to deal with anything too strong, but the angler is fast enough to get away from anything it can't eat so that's not entirely necessary.
If the icthy = pteradon and mosa/plessy = quetz then I'd say the angler = argy, good all rounder and easier to tame than a manta.

it's actually really easy to collect fish meat with the pelagornis as the downward range on it's attack is a lot further than you would expect it to be. Just swim it along the coast or up any river / lake. The only only down side is it's weight. You can even kill land walking dinos relatively easy by luring them into the water and using the swim attack with the pelagornis.

Something else to consider with pelagornis is it won't eat regular meat (or atleast didn't when I played), but all other meat eaters will eat fish meat out of troughs before they try to eat raw meat so you kinda need to keep the pelagornis off in their own seperate area.

But yea as far as actually gathering fish meat, it's super east with pelagornis.

Pelagormless is the only one that eats fish exclusivley, diplocaulus will eat regular meat if it's all that's available.
