I am a solo player so no quetzals , meaning ankys will be a bit bad unless I make a metal farming base, doeds are just ♥♥♥♥♥ because I never need stone, beavers same thing wood is easy to obtain. I don't need chunks of stone or wood when I have chunks of metal
Ankylo is pretty good at thatch too, could cut down on the dino list if you use that. Same for berries, don't need a dedicated berry gatherer imo.
@OP - a great all-rounder I've found is a baryonix. It's reasonably fast moving, can be levelled in melee to hit pretty hard, and no oxygen stat and a stun attack in water makes it an excellent ocean mount. Get a decent quality saddle on it and it covers a lot of the bases.
Another good one, if you can get hold of it, is a mantis. Put a good set of tools in it's claws and it can out-gather a beaver, doed and ankylo easily, and it's abillity to carry weapons makes it a pretty good fighter too. Only weaknesses are low health and weight, but a good defense saddle will help with the first, and having a mule dino on follow that you can unload onto will fix the latter.
It's doable, but very frustrating.
Is it 'the best', no. Honestly though, what's best is what works best for you and your play style.
Don't forget you can use an anky to tank bigger dinos while you're shooting them in the face, since you can use your crossbow from an Anky's back.
I noticed the 5 largest kibble trees all seem to have themes to them.
The lystrosaurus tree is exclusively intended for team play.
The scorpion tree is filled with difficult tames that can benefit a solo player, but you should probably tame in groups.
The dodo tree has the easiest but weakest tames for basic functionality.
The dilo tree is the medium difficulty and medium reward between the dodo and scorpion trees.
The pegomastax tree is for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy, or people who want their tames to take up as little room as possible.
the beaver only gets 50% ? i think its either 50% or 25% not sure
