I've noticed dinosaurs disappearing as well. I've also read from various threads about the Disappearing Dino Bug where your tame disappears with no death message; they just vanish. Within the past 2 days, I've had 2 brontos disappear on me. My lv 150 plus bronto named Big Bertha was there early this morning (midnight Central Time) and by the time I relog in around 5 am (again, Central Time), she disappeared. This is completely unacceptable and needs to be fixed ASAP. I've read that this is an ongoing issue, going as far back as last year. Again, this is completely unacceptable.
I've read an account about a user losing his quetz during a server crash; no death warning. The quetz just disappeared while he was taming something.
I didn't want to post on any of the other threads as I fear I could be chastized for necroposting.
An alternative, if it hasn't disappeared and just migrated elsewhere, is to use the Pet Finder (if the mod is installed into the server you use).
Also, check the Tribe Manager and look in the battle log.
Later there will be Transponders you can craft and put on your dinos, without it it just works the same as IRL when your dog wanders away... even admins cannot help in this, there are no admins command for that.
There are mods like Pet Manager, which have build in dino finder, but if you are playing official and unmodded server, there will be no help.

If they're on Neutral, they will defend themself and you and any other tamed dinosaurs you have. If it's just a Pter, it might have died trying to survive if you can't find it at all. If they are on Aggressive, they will attack everything they see, so returning to you will not be easy for them. Dinosaurs on Neutral might follow those that are Aggressive.
Also, I think the reason the Pteranodon was that high up in the sky was that it was harassed by a mob of Meganeura, and it finally won the fight. As a consequence, the bird ended up really high in the air.
Yes, I know that Pteranodon (and pterosaurs in general) are not birds. But, in the USAF, any aviation vehicle (aircraft) can be referred to as birds, so I'm using the military slang to describe all the aviation mounts in this game as birds.
I recently lost a jerboa when a scorpion attack rendered me unconscious, and I forgot she was on my shoulder and left her there when I came round. I just put floating names on, and flew around till I saw her. She was tiny and I managed to locate her pretty easily mounted on an Argent.
Conclusion, pet finder should really be integrated by the devs.
