The dino will lift it's head automatically to feed itself. Let that happen normally. Force feeding food\berries\raw meat etc won't do anything.
On my server [feel free to join one day IP 23.229.5.36:27115] I have the taming boosted, so the time varies from dino to dino and you must check out the level as well. The lower the level usally translate to a quicker tame. So you might not have to wait as long as you think depending on the server you play on.
I'm still learning about ark, but the when it says:
"Force feeding them anything other than Narcoberries or Narcotic will fill their hunger but will not affect the taming bar, effectively making the tame take longer."
I believe it makes the taming longer because if the hunger is full the dino will not eat. So you want the dino to lift it's head to eat on it's own. Hopefully that will help you understand it better.
Another factor to consider is protecting it. Stay close by and look out for any creatures that may attack it while it's out. If nessecary build a temporary wall around the thing. If the dino is attacked by anything while asleep it will lose taming effectivness, which means the number of bonus levels it gains at the end of the tame will be reduced and the dino will be weaker overall.
Also, most animals are knockout tames, but not everything is. Some are passive tames, and you have to feed them items from the 0 slot of your hotbar while they're awake. Others have special requirements, like the troodon which needs to kill some of your tamed dinos to gain affinity with you.
Tame a bunch of easy dinos to start, like dodos, dilos and turtles, generally about 1 male and 4 females of each. They will start giving you eggs to tame other low level things, and get you onto the kibble ladder. Also, collect plenty of eggs to tame an oviraptor as soon as possible, as that will boost egg production when on wander near your egg dinos. Dinos in a kibble farm don't have to be max level or anything, just get a bunch of low levels to make them easier to tame.
