after a seagul nicks a weapon try checking behind you. somtimes the bird can chuck it behind you.

Only edable items can't be retreved as it will eat them imeddatly. gaining a 'theif' buff for 5 secs wich improves it's regen rate + the afects of whatever its stolen. this can work in your favor if has stolen narcotics or narco berries. but is anoying if it takes food or medical items.

In theory, they don't actually take anything other than food. Weapons you should find on the ground. You drop them when you are hit by the bird.

Guess it is gone forever then anyway /sigh

False, they despawn them quite often. Same with pego..broken mechanic..
They are supposed to let them fall, but actually they despawn it most of the time.

I have my Dimorph set to attack my target and whistle attack any Icthyornis I see now, for that reason.

Yep, best strategy so far.

If you want to escape without big loses - Unequip weapon/tool as soon as battle sound starts ( Q key ).
Have some food split in the bag if possible .. like split berrys into groups of 10-20.
( higher chance it picks worthless food instead of valuable items )

Another option is creating a box and storing everything inside at the spot where you want to farm.

Runing deep into the water works to.

These are good suggestions, but what do you do when you are just fighting a bronto with your argent and out of nowhere you get robbed? It happened to me and I was extremely annoyed.
Games are supposed to be fun.
This isn´t a fun mechanic. It´s only there to fu** us up.
Why they think that this is a fun mechanic is beyond me..

I have yet to see ichthyornis drop a single item that it takes. I'm afraid that the claims that you get items back if they are not edible is not true - either by design or due to a bug, they will NOT drop any item that they steal, and if it's not edible they will just destroy it.

I can say this with certainty after numerous encounters with them. I have looked all over after battles and not seen any drops. Once in particular me and my friends fought one on a large, flat, sandy beach outside our base, with no vegetation or rocks nearby to block vision of item drops. The thing took many items from us, including slingshots, spears and other weapons. And we would definitely have seen the drops on the flat beach if they had been there - they were not.

I guess I have just been extremely lucky, then. I have found my weapon on the ground 100% of the time after an attack.

They are meant to drop the item. Shortly after release I had one attack me on the beach. I didn't know they were a thing until I saw it and didn't realise what it did until I noticed half my hotbar empty. I switched to a shotgun and minced the ♥♥♥♥♥♥, looked around and my stuff was lying around the place and I just picked it up.

EDIT Remember items dropped on the floor have short despawn timers. If I remember correctly the timer is two minutes so if you take that long to look for your crap, it's despawned. Maybe items dropped from this thing have shorter timers.
