Plague in Russia
How do I manage the Black Death and other plagues early on if I can't even build hospitals? Playing as Muscovy and my pops are dropping like flies and it seems I just have to let it spread and fizzle out. Is there anything I can do?

The black plague event has some measures you can choose from so click on that, other than that theres nothing
I mean, even with a hospital the people will die like flies. Thats supposed to happen. Its basically an early game event to further slow you down. Cant really do much to prevent that.
So basically mitigation is all that can be done when it comes to the Black Death event, got it. What about minor plagues, can you eliminate them entirely within your country?
Just build a hospital in your capital and ignore it otherwise... my method. I think I do segregate option too. Sometimes obtain medicine if my budget allows. I don't start market spam till it ends though. Save up in the interim.

Not entirely, as far as i know, so it seems there is a feature happening in 1.3 where enough stacking of disease restistance can make your pop fully resistant, but that is not wanted. Its mainly about mitigation for diseases.
Once you get to 1600-1700 you unlock advantages that allow buildings like hospitals and proper doctors. Until that, all kind of diseases are randomly going to kill your pops, nothing you can do about that. Influenza, Measles, Smallpox, Typhus and some smaller plagues will constantly appear.
Wait... did they remove hospitals in 1.4 too?

Just booted up the game and checked, no they did not, hospitals are still 200 ducats as well.

Thank goodness. LOL. Given how far they swing on these betas you never know. That does make OPs post make less sense though.

I am the OP and yes I tried both base game and new 1.4 open beta and confirmed that hospitals are buildable in both versions. I meant Muscovy is so poor that by the time I reach the Black Death event in the 1360s I can't build hospitals and I'm not sure whether it's worth my entire economy or debt just to slow the spread via spending 200 ducats on a hospital in Moscow regardless.

Now THAT I can identify with. As Luneburg I'm small and poor. Literally have to scrounge, minimum stab. investment, minimal legit. investment, and sometimes still don't even get it started building till after the plague has arrived. I get it. It can be done with mucho micro though, and sacrifices in other areas. My build order is 1 RGO in capital, then hospital, then save for market, which I start right as plague ends, then whatever makes sense thereafter. Milk those estates too.

I can tell you right now... no, its not worth it. You already start with a low economy and mostly peasants and tribesman who do nothing, so them being killed off isnt really doing anything to you. You rather want to spend your money as gifts to diplomatically vassalise your surroundings. Should only need one for Ryazan, tbh, and thats maybe 25-30 ducats.

Yeah...microing as a minor country for a single hospital that in itself might not even have enough people to properly activate its' effects given they're getting killed off by the Black Death and thus will be understaffed in the first place makes me agree with you there. Is it instead wiser to build 2-3 of them as larger majors such as France, Castile, Aragon, and England?

Also I have 4.1k hours in EU4, it's pretty funny and interesting to see how much weaker and vulnerable Muscovy is in EU5 compared to EU4, you could easily steamroll other countries in EU4 as Muscovy, but in EU5 Muscovy functions like a Holland-level minor with little wealth and the decaying but strong Golden Horde next to you.

I will be honest, i have tested the plague with and without hospitals in about every version with large and small countries and the difference is so minimal, it doesnt really matter. It can matter later on, when a large amount of your population is actually working, but at the very start of the game its not worth the 200 ducats in my opinion.

In regard to Muscovy, i have to somewhat disagree. Certainly they arent as strong as Muscovy in EU4, but i find them pretty chill in EU5 as well. I can diplo vassalize like 5 neighbours before the first parliament, then use the first parliament to vassalize Tver and pretty much double my army through subjects. Novgorod is weak, Smolensk is considerably weaker because of my subjects, Kiev can be allied which just makes everything easier and the Golden Horde has so many problems with initial wars against eastern europeans that i can just swoop in real quick to get rid of the Tatar Yoke. Economy wise its not too bad either.

The only real problem is technology. It spreads pretty slow to Russia and we cant force institutions like in EU4. But overall, its a chill campaign.
Interesting thread title, given current real world events.
