Question about fate of the phoenix DLC
With the autumn sale going on. I recently got back into eu5 and was interested on getting it. However, the reviews trash on it extensively and I watched a video of the pre release patch criticizing the dlc as being too focused on Toga wearing Rome and Hellenism over the medieval roman empire. Does anyone that own the dlc could give be a "should avoid/buy" review?

I picked it up when it was released and played through a full byzantium campaign. Never went for hellenism or restoring classic rome. I stayed orthodox and didn't tag switch. reconquered the old Justinian borders (there's an achievement for that).

Don't know exactly which if the new stuff was DLC and what was from the update/base game, but there was a fair bit events and some unique mechanics (mist notably the bureaucracies amd the restore roman borders CB) in that run, so i didn't regret getting the DLC.
As someone who likes byzantium far too much, it depends on what you're going in for, on an absolute scale, it tends to lean more towards ahistory or history-lite if it makes sense. A lot of things byzantium starts with would only exist in name only at this point with the only bureaucracy whose starting position i would agree with being books of the basiliki.

Historical content wise, it tends to tail off a bit as byzantiums OTL situation deteriorates and after age 3 theres only 10 unique historical events for byzantium, I also feel a good amount of the content is kind of on the deterministic side although i do deeply appreciate Byzantium being able to intervene in the italian wars as a faction. On the other side i feel as though the DHe's that set up the revival of greek culture that took place during the start of the game should allow byzantium to force itself as the center of the renaissance or at the very least allow constantinople to automatically get the institution on spawn. Also Byzantine succession is kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as it doesn't keep the title within the dynasty, if you have no male sons then it'll go to your grandson of a different dynasty which makes the empire extremely difficult to keep inside your own dynasty.

For patch 1.4, they seem to have started working on this a bit though, originally there wasn't much content for sticking to romanismos instead of Latinitas but now there's roughly equal and equivalent reforms for which ever way you go to.

I guess as it is now, if you're a hard historian who wants a realistic depiction of Byzantium in the 1300s, dodge it, if you're fine with a mostly incorrect but with a lot of effort put in depicting it buy it if your interested in a byzantium lite depiction

ty for the answer! Im still not 100% convinced because my main issue is that it it focuses too much content on the "alt history" (what if the byzantines started wearing togas, spoke latin, and brought hellenism back in fashion) instead of taking a more grounded approach to it. Similar to that Persia dlc which had much of its content focused on reviving Zoroastrianism. These are fun little bonuses but I have my issue when its the main focus instead of trying for a more "grounded" approach at alt his. If theyre adding more content to sticking with orthodox "byzantine"... byzantium then Ill consider it (though I think the entire toga wearing hellenism thing shouldnt have been a value to begin with, it would be like giving a france dlc a national value to stick with french/frankish or turn into neo gauls)
I think its good but even on sale as always it cost too much for the content.

This mod is free and add more content ... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749893974
