The trick is actually pretty simple: if you're playing a large nation, your economy for the first 100 years is basically just about expanding RGOs and building roads.

The easiest way to build up your economy is to go heavily into debt. Use as much credit as you can get and invest it into roads and the most profitable RGOs, which are often the ones in your capital region.

The consequences of declaring bankruptcy for the first time are nowhere near as bad as they are in EU4. Ideally, you should also use a minister to increase your stability while doing this, because you will lose stability when you go bankrupt, and if it drops below -50, that's when you start running into problems.

I've been using this strategy for several patches now, ever since I played a minor nation in Madagascar that didn't even have a marketplace to begin with.
Dont automate credit, i automate mine and didnt pay attention and in 40 years it racked up 2000 ducats worth of loans for absolutely 0 reason. I had to declare bankruptcy because the interest was too much,
I have exactly the same problem. From what I understand, Paradox changed food mechanics, and now there is a problem with food in all markets. Pops and armies starve constantly, and your country is either using all its money and market capacity to buy food or starves to death after a few years. And market capacity used for food doesn't trade your other goods and doesn't generate income. And on top of that, after some time you end up in a debt dead spiral because your economy can't bounce back. Spamming food RGOs instead of the most profitable ones can solve part of the problem sometimes, but I'm not sure if there is any long term solution for many countries. Maybe I'm wrong about that, so don't think that it's 100% accurate, and maybe there is someone smart here who figured it out.

Sad part is that they tested those changes in beta for few weeks and after that they still released them in last patch. 1.4 is catastrphic in many aspects of gameplay.
Never had Food Problems.
I built up Italy and conquered half of France, then I applied the patch, and my income dropped from over 1,000 ducats a month to -400; the cost of the food I buy has tripled, whereas before I had a substantial surplus.

So I tried building 100,000 ducats’ worth of structures to produce food.
I’m still at -144 ducats a month.

What on earth have they done with this patch? Do they even test their updates?
They always say, that you should start a new Game with a new patch, because they tend to have Problems like you have.

Ive been playing the beta of the patch for a few weeks before the release, for whatever reason it feels like the release version 1.4.5 and the hotfix just made food even worse to manage then the beta patches

The hotfix has pretty much ruined the gameplay, but I’m reading that everyone who’s tried the patch has had problems in Italy.
I was playing Rio Bravo just fine; I always aim for high food production and then pay less attention to it in the later centuries.
just keep playing, it will balance itself out. It's supposed to work this way, currently.

I did an entire campaign not building a single thing and i was getting rich anyways.

use cabinet for control
use parliament for claims and get more land
borrow money from estates / loans to pay for early game
get as many small nations without forts against you, that you can beat instantly
always take max money + war reparations.
Only spend money on troops

Just keep getting bigger until u make profit

In the HRE i use weak countries to pay for my early game, by selecting them as cobilligerent and then peacing them out separately

At around 1400-1450 i start making money, passively.

Works without a single building constructed by myself.
Sounds only like some skill issue. Version 1.4 isn't the problem and build on credit is worst what you can do at 10% intrest rate. Increase crown power and province control and you will be good.

My Sevilla's market has famine but i build up wheat RGOs, mills, improve irrigation, farms, etc...
So i can see they are producing food but for some reason is not enough so all enemies that come to attack me starve to death...

It is not just in Italy. I tried both Granda and Morocco, and with both countries income just went down, down and down.

It's working as intended, it's the game trying to optimise the automated, streamlined system.
