Trying the latest beta patch is a new game needed?
I would imagine so, but man it's a slog to start over. I've not played in a bit, but I want to see what's up with the latest updated patch.

I would advice to start over. Two reasons: flavor added you would miss if not starting over. Economy and vassals are reworked heavily so continuing an old save would probably put you in a situation without any monthly profit and with a group of unloyal rebelling vassals.

Consider also waiting a week before starting a new game, cause 1.4 will be out of beta by then and there will be a new DLC for Iberia.
The beta versions are for testing, they likely break existing saves in weird ways (economy, trade, diplomacy).
We've tried to continue last save in MP and quickly decide to start over - the economy has became broken. In current version no such problems detected.
I started a new game.......I must say I don't like political influence and the 'threatening rival' system needs to go. There's just all kinds of modifiers all over the place that you either lose for stupid reasons or gain and it's all a .05 this and .02% that....and it's still laggy. Bah.
I played as Castile and at some point out of my 3 rivals: France, England and Mameluks - none was threatening. It is simply impossible to avoid that penalty if you are a local power. Being the strongest power in area should be prestigious, right?
