It could be a reverse of Sonic's fur colours since in the comic books there's a green character who turns purple.

That was Evil Sonic from the Reverse Universe. He once juiced up on the Master Emerald and some of the energy stuck with him, turning him green. Before that he was completely identical to Sonic (in physical appearance). He named himself Scourge after that. His super form is, in fact, purple due to the change in his coloration. If he hadn't been changed, he would look exactly the same as Sonic does in super form.
Sonic turns into a shiny gold as a copy to DBZ. That's all there is to it.

It's most likely a DBZ refrence since Super Sonic happend at the same time a seventh choas emerald, but my point was the reverse colouring of blue is yellow and for green it's purple. Tails and Knuckles do go to lighter colours in there super form which would go against this and Silver is litteraly just Trunks but in Sonic, but this was just an altertnative explantion a came up. P.S I know who Scourge is, i read quite a few of the comics, i just didn't want to make the post a paragraph long which is what i did with this.

It's probably just a coincidence. Super Saiyan debuted in 1991, and development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 began in 1991, shortly after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog.

although sega never denied that sonic is influenced by everything what teens liked in late 80s/early 90s, super saiyans and super sonic could be natural eastern power fantasy representations. in eastern cultures gold and yellow often symbolize close to god-like or god-like powers and achievements.
