I've never really thought about using low armor/HP tiles (decks) - but lots of them - as joints for ship-parts! The same goes for the better armor at those levels of a module where crew members are actually working. In my test run, the enemy's cannons' target was concentrated on the parts with wooden armor. Very nice! :)
The only thing that worried me a bit was that the coal storage seemed to be quite far away from the suspendium chambers, but in my test-run, I did not encounter any problems.
according to the coal overlay it takes the crew 1 second to reach all fueled modules (except the main propeller, it takes 2 second to go there) however it was indeed one of my best uglies when i designed it.
also armoring just the crewed parts was a great weight-saving innovation for me at that time however, later designs tend to completely armor the lifters and propeller due their critical importance (however that principle is still usable in lighter ships or applicable with even heavier armors combinations).
and finally i found extensive decking a vital part of my designs, they're light, sturdy, have a full structural bonus and they're fast to walk through. the only problem is that they make ships way more vulnerable to boarders
I hoped the AI would shoot the pipes, causing the keel with the spikes to drop right on top of the enemy. Sadly, it didn't work. Can still take out landships pretty good though (allthough it's unreliable - sometimes the landship will be destroyed completely, sometimes it'll lose just 1-2 modules. Typical ramming).

Dropship. Meant to unload a crapton of marines on the ground, which then walk to capture enemy structures. That way, it can stay far away from the enemy's cannons.

Giant dust-tank bomber. Idea was to buff the tanks' HP so much they'd actually become tanky. The large dust-tanks have 791 HP each, and it can lose around half without being grounded. The conquest-AI can't really stop it, and will often surrender right away.
Nice idea! So this is more of a strategical ship that has its use in conquest mode. It's like a landvehicle that can move independently of roads. :) I might build something similar myself. Does it have such a high service ceiling and such good command if all the ship is supposed to do is to stay back?
Wow! Keels and figureheads (and a bow) it is! That's quite hilarious. I tend to add lots and lots of dust tanks to my bombers, seperated by pipes/struts to prevent chain reactions. But this is something new! :) Tanky dust tanks. ^^
Both is usefull for evading rockets though. Allthough it probably could do with less lift, I guess, but meh. It works.

It doesn't comes cheap at 4000$, but the two heavy cannons gives adeguate firepower. It comes also with a couple normal cannon and bombs to keep the pressure up and gatlings as defence from planes and boarders.
Being a cruiser it's not focused on firepower. It has a medbay, it has a marine brigade for defense and offense flexibility, it has redundant coal and fire points, some secondary cockpit to avoid being "decapitated" but not a great service ceiling.
It's thus kinda vulnerable to high altitude bombers, however the fast command cooldown should help competent commander in working around that limitation.
I don't know how actually viable the design is, but it has been very effective on the campaign. We'd need a tournament to figure out what works and what not in this game
I often wonder what people consider to be an adequate/normal service ceiling?
I suppose we might see some rather extreme builds? I for one usually build alrounder-fleets, but each ship-type fulfils its individual task. Partly because of this, I created the Arakhnas - if she works properly, I can have the long-range battleships behind her safe of boarding attempts, which saves me weight/height (no guards needed).
Small video of an Arakhnas test (new version updated in post #1):

They are designed for the "Conquest" mode, meaning I was trying to minimize their cost and maintenance cost. Without making them visually unappealing or stupid though...
For the minor settlements I am just using a big bunch of zero-maintenance-cost buildings.
With defensive approach AI can not do anything to you even on the highest difficulty. And when he builds ridiculous amount of buildings himself, you just smash them with Siege Machine.
Siege Machine I
Heavy Metal armored Airship with Torpedoes. Remarkably good against settlements fully covered by rocket defences.

Moppet I
It does not require any Tech (0 Tier) and costs less than 200$.

Grenadier I
0 Tier Bomber.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1480707495
Heavy Caliber II
Advanced heavy ship to make some holes. Can not reach very high though.

Musketeer III
Armed with machineguns to whipe that small aircraft and infantry out.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1480738377
Zero maintenance cost building which defends from all sides.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1480770453
Watchtower III
Zero maintenance cost building equipped with machineguns on both sides. Not the most practical, but looks cool. And sometimes makes AI astonished.

Outpost I
0 Tier building. Zero maintenance. I even used grenades on that. Not effective, but cheap.

Frontal fortification II
Cheaper version has no defence backwards whatsoever.

Note to self: I need to make it even faster with better reaction. Height is not that important.
This ship (or slight variations thereof) forms the basis of my fleets and has carried me through several imperial difficulty campaigns - it punches above its weight and is weirdly survivable, which I think is because it "floats" even after most components are destroyed, letting me float it back to a shipyard for repair. Also, it has a flight ceiling high enough to bully most other ships, taking advantage of the rocket's super wide firing angles.
Plus I think it looks kind of nice and isn't a gunbox, which are my house rules for ships.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1489833306
Heavily armoured with the highest possible ceiling (well actually higher) and with exceptional speed this literally tank uses it's 6 cannons to tear apart bombers and when stacked in a line prevents them getting over craft that can't go quite so high.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1489833868
The Crusher, a heavy cannon, four gatlings, an aerial torpedo and multiple bomb bays allow this to wreck havoc on anything in the sky or on the ground. One of these can destroy most other ships easily, enmass they can destroy ships that are trying to surrender before the game can process that.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1489834689
The Grand Lancer equipped with a variety of the heaviest weapons available and with heavy armour to back it up this ship can wipe out multiple other ships but it is vulnerable to bombs without cover from Tanks or Crushers.
