I alt tab the game whenever I see a cutscene of that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Machina. Can't believe he's the one who survives in the end while the rest of class 0 dies. Really dumb ending.

I don't think he really cared about protecting the nation, just Rem, so becoming l'Cie for opposing nation makes a little bit more sense.
Either way, ♥♥♥♥ Machina, the story would have been so much better if he would have been replaced with some actually likeable character, or with pretty much any other male character in the game.
