Save file is gone, don't know what to do

I've just started the game up this morning and my 60 hour save file has effectively disappeared? The "continue" option is grayed out and the only option I have is to start a new game.

The game was working perfectly up until now, I tried verifying the game cache but the problem is still there.

I hope this doesn't mean what I think it means...

Go check in AppData\Roaming\DarkSoulsII is there a file that starts with DS2SOFS
If not, you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck

Where is AppData? I can't find it?

Back up this save file manually time to time. They say previously there were hacks that could grant you millioms of souls on killing invaders, which can ruin your multiplayer experience. The only way to avoid it was to restore your old save. I'm not sure if it's fixed now, but still recommend to manually make copies of your save files.

But it was working fine just last night? Any time I was pvping I was using the agape ring. It has literally just stopped working this morning?

C:\User\ "Your Username here"\ AppData\Roaming

If you can't find the AppData folder, it's mostlikely hidden/you don't have permissions to view it

Thanks for the warning. Will have to backup my Steam saves again. Been needing to update the backups for a while now anyway.

Okay, I've found the folder, interestingly, they're both in the same folder called DarkSoulsII

Inside there are 2 files

DARKS2.00000.sl2

and there's:

DS2SOFS.00000.sl2

So this strikes me as strange...I thought they'd have separate folders, they have separate install directories after all?

Anyway, I'll back both of em up, what's the next step Hopit?

Wait, does your save games have the dot between DS2SOFS and 00000.sl2? Or did you manually add that?

No there's no dot it's DS2SOFS0000.sl2, what do I do with it anyway?

Yes, I backed both up now, just need to know where to stick it, the date of the SOFS save also matches the time i logged out last night, so god only knows what happened in between

Also, why doesn't this game have cloud saves as a matter of interest? Even Dark Souls 1 has had them since the steamworks patch, I can slightly understand why vanilla Dark Souls 2 might not have it, but it's crazy that SOTFS doesn't...

move the savegame away from the folder, delete the folder, start the game, let the game create a new folder (probably gonna have to create a new character, just for a while?), quit, move the backed-up savegame in the folder

OR
first start a new game so a file is created (ie, move the old save away).
then quit to title screen..
overwrite save file with the one you had backed up in the appdata on pc. (Overwrite while you're at the main menu)

If that doesn't work, then you will mostlikely have to start a new character and remember to backup your save everytime you stop playing
