Define light.

What kind of defense do you want? Strike, defense, slash, thrust, magic, lightning, fire?

How early do you want it? Provided you have the souls you can get Alva and Elite Knight armor as soon as you arrive in Majula.

There is no best armor - only what suits your build.

Light armor has a total weight between 0 and 15. I need something lighter than Alva.

totally superior elemtal defense wise is the black witch set - as far as phy defence concerning, maybe alonne? - but phy def on light armor is meaningless anyway

Focus on what looks better, defense is only noticeable when you are wearing the super heavy armors in pvp.

I tend to use the black leather set and the Elite Knight Armor. I alternate depending on speed requirements.

You can get the Aurous early, but the others are pretty late game.

Tattered cloth is my personal favorite

Tseldora gives you a boost in acquired souls

Otherwise there are other great late game armours like llewellyn, lucatiel's, and the judgement sets.

Best light set is full Lion Warrior set. Helm+red cape+cuffs+skirt. But helm/red cape is RARE drop from non respawn Golden lion only.

Ascetic the Majula bonfire twice at the start of the game, buy the Butterfly set from armourer. It has EXTREMELY high defense for its weight.

My opinion on the weight classes by chest piece of the set:
light armor: 0-5 units
Medium armor: 5-14
Heavy Armor: 14 - ?

Light armor: wanderer set, fume sorceress, chaos set, Felkin's Set, Straid's Set, Shadow Set, Northwarden set and a few others
Medium Armor: Auros set, Rampart Golem set, Raime Set, Drakeblood Set, (Sir) Alonne Set, Llewellyn set, Loyce Set, Ivory Set, Sanctum Set, Forlorn set
Heavy Armor: Havel, Dragonrider, Smelter

The earliest to get is the wanderer set, either you simply start with it or collect it in the lost bastile, similar with Felkin's (20fth 20int and talk or kill him to buy it) and Straid's (trade 4 souls with him), the shadow set can be farmed in the lost bastile and no man's wharf, the auros set is hidden in the gutter after the pit.
