Well, when both are +10 the UGS goes to S scaling. The red iron twinblade is A. Pretty close though. I think the sheer speed of the weapon makes up for the small damage deficit.
This one: http://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Greatsword
Just looked and for me the diference in damage between the two is 118. That is the base plus the bonus.
Also the piercing attack like you mentioned is nice to have.
I'd just go with whatever you like best, or switch between the 2 from time to time, for PvE you can easily get away with not having the best of the best.
RIght now Im all melee. Should probably make use of magic.
Yes, Red Iron Twinblade is amazing. In fact, it's so good, I avoid picking it up because everything after that is just far too easy.
The only thing that I like better about the great sword is how easily it breaks poise. The Red Iron Twinblade doesnt do that as well. The stone ring helps though. As long as I dodge some though I can take down a mob without being hit. With the great sword I can stand there and just use the shield. The great sword is just too slow though. I like the twinblade a lot now.
Funny how it was just laying there in the swamp, not guarded by and special mob. Another awesome thing is how I can backstab with it! I love that.
In greatsword we trust.
