well...
that sucks
In breakdown, you fix the RV and refresh the map.
In lifeline, you take a ride on the helicopter to escape.
Where are you dying slowly? You can easily spend 30+ hours on a single map, looting all the locations.
As for the outpost resources, each one has a materials requirement. Its 1 material required per outpost. Each outpost can generate 2 of the item you left in a rucksack in the outpost when you created the outpost. So its a good idea to have materials outposts so you can keep the other outposts generating loot.
Nope. With good outpost and base setup, you won't even need to search for supplies anymore. So you can survive endlessly.
Example:

All my stockpile(food, ammo, fuel, medicine) increase every day, except construction materials, but I don't need that anyway, since my base is already finished.
There's zero reason to stay on one map for hours and hours unless you're trying to max out certain base improvements to unlock achievements/characters.
And, yes, in the menu you can choose whether or not to play the campaign or the DLC.

Congrats! Good luck on The Sniper.
And each mode has its own save games.
